Getting real close to needing to get an exhaust installed so I can be street legal. I have a split header installed and I plan on going with 2.5" exhaust...Any opinions on dual exhaust vs single. Haven't made a decision just looking for info either way. Also would like muffler suggestions as well.
TIA

4 or 6 cylinder motor in my opinion dual isn't really needed so I'd base that decision off of price. I have a Thrush brand muffler I installed this weekend that sounds good and was only 40 clams
I was thinking dual exhaust on a 6 cyl. vehicle is for posers, but JTuckers proposal to have the duals come off the header and out at the same location makes me rethink that.
It might be tough finding just the right muffler to accommodate the parallel duals. You might find a local muffler shop that can help you out.
I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with. Keep us posted.
My header(Banks) is here.
The Magnaflow head pipe and cat kit for a 97-99 will be here tomorrow.
The Banks cat-back will be here by weeks end.
Everything is stainless so I shouldn't have any more issues providing I can make it all fit. Also ordered all new mounting hardware from the dealer.
If you run Dual pipes you need to install a cross over pipe to get the back pressure balance you need, even stock V8's back in the day had a cross over, it just runs better that way.
Years ago i used to work in an independent shop that had their own pipe bender. They also carried flowmaster mufflers. We rarely had to sell an pipes or mufflers. Most customers came in and wanted what was popular 2.5 inch dual's with 40 series Flowmaster's and 4 inch chrome tips . You could tell the customer till you were blue in the face that any small block putting out 300 horsepower or less at the flywheel did not need anything bigger than 2 inch pipes. Anything bigger kills torque. I didn't matter that i was ase certified or that i had years of experience it was always trumped by what was popular. Big pipes and mufflers that make any 250 horsepower small block sound like it had a small cam. Everybody wanted that sound. I'm not saying you're looking at going the popular route. I'm just saying it's proven fact a stock small block v8 loses torque with anything bigger than 2 inch pipes . I goes without saying a 6 cylinder engine would suffer the same outcome. The 4.2 and 4.0 are designed for low rpm torque, not high rpm horsepower. I'm just trying to lend sound advice backed by facts and years of experience.
