Smittybilt quality?

I hear a lot of Jeepers bashing on Smittybilt for having inferior quality.

I was at the Jeep dealership getting a part the other day and I saw a OEM Jeep with Smittybilt EVERYTHING.

So... is Smittybilt really that poor of quality? I know their parts are pretty cheap, and the mantra: "You get what you pay for" rings.

They look good. From what i have seen/heard some of the stuff they have is built like pop cans.

Yeah. My jeep is a dd, so as such will not see much off-road action.

So I was wondering if smittybilt would be a good choice since it just has to look good.

I just got my XRC8 in the other day.
Now I'm waiting for my new bumper.
I have a Body Armor quad-hoop that should be in next weekend.
I removed the stock step the weekend after I bought it & installed the HighRock retractable step for my wife. She's a little lady.

No it is not as poor quality as everybody makes it out to be. Most of the people that bash on smittybilt dont even own smittybilt parts, plus theres something called warranty which smittybilt has a 5 year warranty on all there parts not many can say that about the products on there jeeps.

I have the XRC rock sliders. Much tougher than pop-cans and look fine. Probably like many other companys that went thru expansion, manufacturing changes, outsourcing etc quality may have suffered at some point. Seems to be on average now.

I have a Rockcrusher rear bumper for a year now and its been fine, no rust and it is built thick as hell, no powder coating issues. Only problem I have had is the directions were not that clear!

I had a Smittybuilt 10k winch on my previous XJ and it was much more dependable than I expected.
Although my truck was built well and I usually used it to get others un-stuck, I used it atleast 100 times in less than a year with no issues, except for some serious battery drain. A snatch block and better alt/battery solved that problem.
I broke my remote (my fault) and when I called them to order another, they sent me a new one at no charge

I plan to buy another in the future, and would recommend them highly

Smittybilt extended top quality problems

Ive purchased two extended brief tips from Smittybilt. Both times I broke the buckes that secure the top to the jeep. Called Smittybilt and they replaced with no problems. I explained I'd rather have a quality top that doesn't break and they said they'd send me another.

Not the same as bumpers, winches, etc but quality control can seep into other areas as well. You definitely get what ou pay for in my opinion.

I am happy to hear about the SB winches, I am prob going to buy the XRC8. I already have a SB rear bumper w/hitch and d-rings. Going to buy a front bumper first, then save up for the winch. I have had no issues with the rear bumper. Feels like its made out of solid iron.

Smitty Bilt Rocker Guards

I purchased a set of SmittyBilt bolt on rocker guards from Morris 4x4 recently. When they arrived the product looked great. I powder coat finish was acceptable. I touched up two spots that had exposed metal most likely from shipping.
The drivers side installed fairly well. The fit was a little tight over the body bolts, but I persuaded it on. The passenger side would not fit at all. I removed both parts and laid them on the floor in my garage, side by side. This is when the problem jumped out at me. The mounting brackets were not installed in the same location form side to side. The drivers side brackets were 49 inches measured outside to outside. The passenger side measured 48 5/8 inches. This is why the bolts would not fit into the slotted mounting holes.
I called Morris to discuss this issue. They, in turn, called SmittyBilt to see how they would remedy this problem.
The SmittyBilt rep suggested reaming out the hole, which voids the warranty, to make the part fit on my 2013 JK. They also suggested jacking the front end to tweak the frame and make the part fit! How about I take a BFH and pound the part onto my brand new JK???
Needless to say, I was not impressed with SmittyBilts customer service and the parts were returned to Morris. Perhaps SmittyBilt needs to step up their quality control and train better customer service reps??

I bought the cheap Smitty front and rear D-ring bumpers, they work just fine, took down a PG&E fence accidentally up near Quincy Ca. and it didnt even scratch it.

I also have a Smitty center console, the cup holder SUCKS! its been demoted to loose change holder, also one of the spot welds on the cover for where you are supposed to mount the stereo started to come loose, Im sure I can rip it off with minimal strength, but i resist the urge....
