Smittybilt Standard Bucket Seats vs OEM [pics]

I needed to do something about my seats and I decided to try the Smittybilt Standard Bucket Seats, currently on sale for $99/each. I looked at a bunch of pictures online and I couldn't find a picture comparing them to the OEM seats so I decided to make this post, in case someone else is looking.

First impressions - not bad at all considering the price. I wish they had a little bit higher backs, but it is what it is. For $200/set I don't think you can go wrong.

I will add a picture of them installed this weekend.

I have the Smittybuilt seats in my 93 yj . You will find they sit a little higher than the OEM, which I like. The ones for 99.00 do not recline. They are more comfortable than the OEM . And Like you said for that price its hard to go wrong.

I got the ones from Rugged Ridge and they are comfortable and hold you in place because of the side bolsters. The only issue I have now is that they sit up a lot higher than the OEM ones and now my head hits the sound bar. I am taking it out anyway because I didn't like the speakers being right behind me ear so it's not a big issue.

Well my happiness with these seats was somewhat short-lived. One minor irritation right from the start was the fact that the factory hardware did not fit the bottom of the seat. I called their tech support and they assured me I need to use 5/16" coarse thread bolts. Nope, the seat was tapped for 8mm x 1.25 pitch. That's a minor problem, but still.

The BIG issue is that because the bottom cushion is a lot thicker than the OEM ones, I can barely get in and out of the Jeep now and my legs are rubbing against the steering wheel. It looks like there is no easy solution to this problem; I thought about removing the slider bars which would give me another 1.5" of clearance, which is perfect, but the seat will need to go much further forward in order to mount to the bracket...

Any ideas?

I got another chance to thinker with the seats and I got them to fit. I ended up removing the sliding rails and bolting them directly to seat brackets. They are still a little taller than the factory seats, but the difference now is negligible. I am kind of bummed about losing the adjustment capability, but it is what it is, for the price I paid I can't really complain. On the positive side, the seats are very comfy and look really nice, a lot better than the stock pictures I must say.

good post, I am fixing to order some myself, I would think they should compress some after a while. They look good though.

I had a set of those, lasted 2 summers in the sun and fell apart. Kept my 26 year old beat stockers, so they are back in.

Well that's encouraging. Out of curiosity, did you ever treat them with anything? I have a bunch of vinyl cleaners and protectants that use on my boat cushions so my first job was to apply some on these seats as well.

Yep, maguires stuff, when the got hot in the sun, you can really tell how cheap the vinal was. My factory passenger seat is still perfect after 26 yr, and my driver is too, except for the seat bottom. After I tossed the replacments and reinstalled the originals, I just restitched the drivers seat and called it a day.

Odd, I have the same seats in my jeep, they're getting close to 7 years old now and I just noticed some of the stitching coming loose, other than that they are still in good physical shape. Far more comfortable than the factory seats.
Visually, they are beginning to look rough because I don't have a top, most I do is toss a tarp over the driver's seat in the winter.
Mine are light gray, so black seats may have different weathering effects.

I just installed these seat and love the way they sit and feel. So far I don't see any issues with them, seem well built to me. I would recommend them.
