Snorkel ideas needed

Ok, I need ideas for a home made snorkel. Basically, it will be all PVC pipe and filter at the top (along with the existing air filter).
Something like this : Support Groups for Jeepaholics - Home made snorkel write up
Now, the question is, I do not want to run the intake from down below and then back up. I want to drill through the gap between the hood hinges and the windshield region. I do not have a clue as to why that compartment is empty with air vents at the top. Is it ok to drill there?

are you talking about the area in front of the windshield with the grille on it?

hey Geoff. i was looking at the cold air intake you put in the thread. it looks as if the air goes into the box under the air filter. would it be "safer" to go in through the intake box lid or would it detract form the purpose?

NavyChief: Sorry! Absolutely not my project. Just saw it on Google. And well beyond my abilities.

But it feels nice having you ask questions of me.
