soft top/hard top

It appears that the hard top won't go back on the body if the soft top belt rails aren't removed - correct?

you would be correct since the hard top uses the same bolt holes as the rails for the soft top.

Thanks for the info.

This is my first jeep, and I'm still learning about it. It also didn't come with an owner's manual, so I'll have some other basic questions along the way which may seem stupid (recommended fluids and capacities, etc.)
