So today on my lunch break I noticed a new sound in my Jeep. Its just a 'click.....click.....click..' when the Jeep is moving, sounds like its coming from under/inside the dash on the drivers side, probably over 20mph or so. It seemed to go up with tire speed, so I was thinking maybe speedo cable? But I looked up under the dash and I couldn't see a cable, is the speedo electric on a 93 YJ? The sound almost sounded like little electrical zaps, but theres no other problems with it and I smell nothing burning and could see no damaged wires under the dash. Any ideas? Thanks yall.
always check the simple crap first, since you said it seems to go with speed of tires. nothin worse than takin crap apart, and overlookin somethin stupid. i've had customers come in for similar problems, and thats all it was. after that, not a whole lot moving with vehicle, check u joints, and driveshafts, brake backing plates, debris near these parts also. let us know.
i think i have the same noise LOL. i'll hear it for a while and think i'll start to rip the dash apart then it goes away and i forget about it. its a viscious cycle. i just turn the radio up.
It just REALLLLY sounds like its coming from the inside. One quick question though. On the rear U-joint when its bolted to the yoke. Should I be able to move the U-joint from one side of the yoke to the other? I don't know a better way to explain it...Ok should the rear u-joint be able to move at all within the yoke (I dont mean worn out u-joint, it slides from the little stop thing on one side of the yoke the the stop on the other side.
not at all. straps could be loose, there's little tabs on the yoke that hold the u joint in place that could be worn out. or its the wrong u joint. i can remember having a problem where an aftermarket drive shaft had a different length on it, so drive shaft part of u joint was different than axle yoke. you can get a u joint with two different lengths, if this is the case. make sense? the cross was different sizes. so if someone used a regular u joint, with same dimensions all around, and it needed two different dimensions. i'm suprised the drive shaft hasn't come out yet. get this fixed right away, or it could let loose
I have a 2002 and the same sound is eminating from a switch of some sort mounted below the steering column directly behind the center retainer of the lower dash panel. Any ideas what this switch is? I notice the tempo of the clicking changes when I push the door light switch.
