Spare Tire Carrier

gettin back to my 93 renegade, it came with no spare tire carrier
looked at a few, im runnin 33's. this particular model, as i see it
really has no room for a swing arm carrier, if not really off roading,
any suggestions on a good bolt on tailgate carrier?? thanks

i had a 33x12.5 on my factory carrier, just had to take the 4 rubber stoppers off to make it fit.

i would look for a used one that someone doesnt want or need. that would be the simplist and cheapest way...

i got one im not currently using, where are you located?

I am running the OR FAB swing away w/ 2 Jerry Cans. The thing is well constructed and ties to the rear body mount and plenty of sandwiching the tub. I was hit from behind earlier this year and they went into and under my spare. The carrier distributed the hit so well that the only issue I had was to put air back into the spare!

I would not reccomend running an over size spare off the stocke carrier. I was only runing a 32"x11.5" and hadn't taken it off road yet. I had to remove it because my hinges for my rear gate are now shot and need replacing from the extra weight. The gate has about 1" of play up and down because of it. I would look into either 5the bestop carrier or look up thedirtworkx rear tire carriers on ebay. He is currently working on a custom carrier for me and so far from the pics it looks great.

I really like the Bestop Oversize Tire Carrier because it opens together with the tailgate.

not to hijack the thread but I dont like the way the stock tire carrier doesnt really tighten up without the rubber bumpers half way pushed into my sidewall of my tire. don't really like seeing the four impressions it leaves behind. does it make any difference with them off. I would assume it would add more depth. I would think they are only there to stop any vibrations and noise. I am only putting a 235/75r15 back there. I just want it to tighten up so it can't easily be taken off.

no worries

Would my spare carrier be able to handle a 33" spare? i think the actual carrier will be ok but i'm worried about the door hinges. Its basically this: ( Olympic 4x4 Products 707-401 - Olympic 4X4 Products Heavy Duty Tire Carrier for 76-06 Jeep® CJ-5, CJ-7, Wrangler YJ, TJ, Unlimited & Cherokee XJ - Quadratec ) but a different version

Someone makes one for the YJ that looks like the stock one but extends further.
I checked JCW & Quadratech, but no luck.

i ran a new 32x11.5 MTR as a spare on my stock carrier for 2 years and the hinges never loosened up.

taking off the rubber bumpers will not hurt it, thats how i had to do it to fit my spare, it just bearly touched the tailgate when bolted down.

and if you were afraid of hurting it but didnt want to buy a whole new bumper with swing away the one from bestop would serve you best because it attached to the tub and the tailgate for support and gets it out of the way.

$300 though...

yeah, i saw that for sale, ok dumb question, i can surely understand
having the same size tire, say 33" for a spare, for appearance.
why cant you go with a smaller tire as a spare??? if not off-roading,
could you drop to a 20" or a little larger, jeep would be tilted, front
or back, depending on tire replaced, but its just a spare to get
you home, good or no good?????

I have a '95 wrangler with no where to put the spare excpet for in the vehicle. The auto parts place priced a bracket assembly, used, around $120 which sounds good but I don't know.

You said you carry yours on the bottom? That sounds like a good idea, can you tell me about that? I'll admit I am clueless about car stuff though...
