Spare tire question

I have 31x10.5 tires. The spare is so heavy that it has broken my spare tire rack. Rather than spending a fortune on some monster spare carrier and also adding all of that weight (I only have a 4 banger), what would be wrong with just getting some dinky short range spare (and putting a cover on it).

Are there mechanical reasons that would preclude me from running a small tire, even temporarily, assuming that I was not off road somewhere when the flat occurred?

Would the 50 mile spare even touch the road with the other 3 tires being 31's?

Man, I don't know. Do they make skinny 31" spares?

My spare is a 31x 11.50 (for some reaosn) which might explain some of the extra weight. All are on 15" wheels.

A passsenger car running one of those donuts is one thing. Expecting a jeep to run on three wheels is another. If you have no other suspension or special equipment that would leave you completely off balance, yes you could limp along on the shoulder with a donut. However any tire that would come close to keeping the jeep riding level would be so close in weight that the difference would not be worth it.

I put mine up in my carrry basket and took carrier off my back gate because I run 31 x 10.5 also and one of my studs was broken off.

Thank you Grandpa Jeeper. I have thought about this alot the last couple of weeks and I think that your solution is the way that I will go. For now I have removed the back seat and have room to stick the spare there. The broken spare tire rack is coming off today. I would rather put the dollars into a cage than some type of massive spare tire holder with a swing gate thingee.

With such a difference in tire size, wouldn't the drivetrain bind up (one wheel spinning at a different speed than the others)?

Just a thought that leaped out of my head.

Why don't we get you a better solution. Let me see if I can find my spare carrier, and just send it too you. That would be your best fix. I can't imagine why a little 31" tire, would harm the carrier.

I would recommend checking out the Congo Cage by Kargo Master. They make a heavy duty carry rack specifally for the Wrangler either YJ or TJ. I added a carry basket I already own and made a hook to keep the tire in place.

Depends on how and where you drive. I do back roads and Forest Service trails. I don't plan on looking like an upended turtle. Don't have the money or desire to go out and trash my jeep just to say I did it, and then have the repair bills.

Hey Willis, I still have the original tire carrier, for a YJ. If you want it, I will send it to you. There is no reason why a 31" tire should break the spare tire carrier. If you want to know what heavy is, try lifting a mounted 42" tire with beadlocks. Now that is heavy. A mounted 31" tire is something you can throw half way across a football field, with one arm.

Please do not attempt this at home, as it is a exaggeration, to make a point.

This weekend I took the tire and carrier off. The person who had this jeep before me had put some type of extender on the standard rack. I guess that the weight of the wheel and the 31x11.5 spare being extended out and only contacting the base carrier on one little part is what did the trick and broke it.

I have thought about the overhead rack, but that will end up costing alot of money as well, so I am just going to give the basic tire rack a try again (without the extender), possibly go ahead and get a 10.5 versus 11.5 spare and see how it goes.
