Unhappy Stop it

I have just got my first jeep a 89 wrangler.I did not think it stopped quick enough so just did a complete rear brake job. The front brakes look great but it still did not stop like I thought it should so I replaced the master cylinder but It is no better. The only thing I have not replaced is the proportioning valve.it will stop you but does no have a tight peddle and you can not apply enough pressure to make them lock up but it will stop.is this normal or am I just used to newer disk brakes.
Thanks
Troy

I have an 89 and it stops fine. The rear brakes might be good but you get most of your stopping power from the front. Maybe your calipers aren't functioning properly. My brakes will lock up if I need to. If you're running over sized rims and tires it will affect the stopping performance of a stock brake set up with the extra stress of the weight.

Are you sure you don't have any air in the brake lines?

I do have 31 x 11.5 but I don't think I have air in the lines I don't see any when I bleed them.

That small of a tire shouldn't make a difference in braking and my yj stops on a dime, so the newness isn't the problem, it sounds like air in the system. I know you checked it but check it again, its a lot cheaper to add more brake fluid. Your front brakes are going to do a lot more of the work than your rear maybe the front calipers aren't engaging properly...usually a sign of air in the system. Good luck, keep us updated.

It's definitely not as good as a 4-wheel disc vehicle, but my YJ stops pretty good still. They're not too heavy so the rear drum setup is more than sufficient IMO. Are your rear shoes adjusted properly?
