Question Suggestions for a New Jeep Owner

Hello everyone, this is the first jeep I have ever owned and it needs some serious work. It is a 1989 Sahara with 89000 actual miles. It has some serious surface rust (photos coming soon) and some engine rust, but the underneath looks new. I have aftermarket rims with 235/75R15 goodyears on it. I have the carbed 4.2L and the TF999 as best as I can tell. The jeep sat for six years and now it has a super rough idle and most often dies at anything less than 1500 rpm. It is pretty much impossible to drive as is. I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble of bringing the engine back to life or if I can drop a small block chevy in it for fairly little money. I have a mechanic that will help me do the engine swap, he suggest a fuel injected 327 sbc and he can change everything to fuel injection, including the gas tank and fuel pump. I also want to know if anyone has any experience with bolting a sbc to the 999 or if it is preferred to carry over a chevy tranny. The only kits i could find to connect engine to tranny is 500 bucks and the tranny to transfer is about the same. I'm just looking for some insight from someone who has possibly done the same thing or something similar. Thanks!!

If it sat for 6 years maybe a tune up would help and a good carb cleaning. You did try this ? Low mines so engine should be good. Then drive it a while.

I have taken it to a shop to get some small stuff done, I still need to replace all the vacuum and fuel hoses (dry rotted). The carb is running super rich right now to compensate for the gummed up carb. I was told I might have to do a rebuild or buy a new carb if I couldn't get this one to clean up nice, any suggestions on a replacement carb, or where to get a good rebuild kit? also, what kind of mileage does the 4.2 get when running top notch?

My YJ is a 95 so no carb. They came with Carter Carbs which reall suck. I had one on my 76 Volarie and 84 AMC Eagle. Most people replace them with another brand however i can't recall what kind. Do a forum search on this as i know I have seen people mention what kind of carb they used.
