I don't have any instances where i've been pulled over or anything but i feel like whenever I have my top and doors off I always get watched by the cops. Yesterday I had a cop follow me and then pulled up next to me at a stop light and was watching me the entire time. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I don't seem to get those looks with my top and doors on.

i got pulled over for speeding probably 10 yrs ago now, cop rattled off all kinds of crap that was wrong, bumper height, tires too wide and so on, but just gave me the speeding ticket.

then all my idiot friends from high school, that caused the most trouble became cops. they would pull me over randomly to frea me out. worked great the first few times.

I have found that different states have different restrictions or regulations
about different things, like you stated. Thought the winch on the front was ok,
till I got a ticket for covering the turn signal lights on the YJ. After removing
the winch, no problems. Had lots of friends ticketed for the tread outside the
fender. So best to learn the state laws for your area first.

I got pulled over a couple of times. The first was for drifting around a wet corner. That was embarrassing. I was a block from my house when I did it and was in my driveway when he stopped me. My wife glared at me from the front porch as the cop talked to me.

The second was after I did the SOA. Apparently Oregon has a rear tire exposure law. If you have more than so many inches of exposed tire to the rear your required to have mud flaps. I got a fix-a-ticket.

A third time was for too much bass after 10pm. He gave me a warning, smiled big and left. I'm not sure why he smiled but it might have had something to do with the "Cops Rule" tee shirt I was wearing at the time.

my buddy got his TJ pulled over 3 times in 3 weeks, all by the same cop.
he didnt have mudflaps, nor did he care enough to put them on.
after the 3rd time though, enough was enough. he put on some cheapo flaps.

Just last week i was pulled over right in front of my house, for a brake light out. After 30 minutes and myself and my jeep searched i got a warning for my tail light. The cop said i was "nervous", and looked like i was trying to hide something. Im not sure if it was the jeep or he just wanted to hassle me for awhile. Im really being to not like cops.

Apparently my brake light fuse burned out.... 6 mo. ago.

One of my State trooper friends told me today, said he noticed it back in october and forgot to tell me.... close to a dozen times.

I haven't really had any problems with 'the man'

Believe it or not, you were well within your rights (4th ammendment) to not consent the search of your vehicle. An officer would need probable cause or a reasonable suspicion of criminal activity, assuming you didn't have anything illegal in plain sight; however, I'm sure he would try to find one way or another make you sit there just as long or longer regardless.

Oh, and not to hijack... The only times I've ever been hassled was in highschool when I drove a white '79 CJ5. It was unique to the area and the cop must have recognized it from the parking lot of school. Needless to say, The local cop atarted to just follow me around at night/early morning... so I usually decided I would take him for a tour of the town and would take all the little side streets one-by-one or somehow end up behind him, and stuff like that just to pick on the poor guy.

here in town if you refuse to let them search your vehicle they bring the drug dogs out and run them around your car a few times..

pretty crappy but its happened to PLENTY of my friends..

heck they did "random" searches where the would pull over us high schoolers coming home from school if we had 2 or more people in the car.. damn near EVERY one of us was pulled over at one point in time.. they had about 5 cops out posted on the corners of the roads out by our schools 2 of them had drug dogs..

it wasnt until about 5 months of their bullshit our city hall declared it illegal

as far as indiana's laws when they come to the vehicle itself.. we get by with damn near everything =D

i have one sheriff that has hated me for my dad holding his son up at gunpoint for breaking into our house.. hes pulled me over a good 10 times.. once on his harley he stopped in the middle of the road and pulled a gun out on me.. said i drove through the schools lawn leaving school.. had my school cop pull up the video of the parking lot and it CLEARLY showed me leaving the drive and didnt come near the lawn..

after the 9th 10th time, my dad called a lawyer and had him contact the sheriff station.. hes stopped since then.. but he even tried to get me for breaking into my OWN house when i opened my garage door from my jeep with my opener.. i had my id on me with MATCHING addresses.. it was at 1 in the morning but i was 18 at the time, so i wasnt in curfew violation.. my dad came outside screaming at his ass and he left

I know full well i could have told him no but i figured that would give him good reason to hassle me longer, and give him probable cause to search it anyway. I wasnt hiding anything, although he was pretty interested in the cooler of beer in the back, and my possum club. But being 18 im allowed to transport alcohol, say for my 21 year old brother, and I explained to him what the club was for.

ha ha i'm sorry but i got this thing i do for instances like this one... I "STARE" back. I've decided to make it uncomfortable for both of us. Only been pulled over once for doing it. But it was some noob cop. So i ended up with a "quit staring at cops" warning lol

Exact oposite of that. The PD's parking lot has enough Jeeps in it to start a police Jeep club

yep, here in detroit, they pretty much leave me alone. (bigger problems...) i've pulled nxt to cops w/ no doors (and no side mirrors) w/ about 6" of total lift 33's no soft fenders (removed them) no top. i just casually scan around see them see me...nod to em and look back at the road...no problems. but being ex- military who hasnt really changed my mode of dress the're either scared or i fit in apperance wise to them. and they probably dig my rig. this summer i'll push my luck w/ the loud azz 350 im packin' and if they run my plates they will see my C.C.W permit

Pa. state troopers are all about some rule books! I've heard of other folks being hassled by them too, though I was never pulled over for 4wheel type violations in the thirty five years I lived in Philly.

Jersey troopers, are even worse on 4by's.

You shouldn't have any problems in N.C. with your top & doors off.

I now live in S.C. & down here you can get tags for a sandrail. I think the same is true of N.C.

I have actually made my YJ's windshield removable, Though I wouldn't recommend it at freeway speeds.

I run around all the time with no hood, & actually had a cop tell me my heep looked cool like that.

Exact same thing here!

Most of the issues we see here are no mirrors with doors off and tires too wide/wheel spacers/stickers on the windshields... Of course being a fellow jeeper and po-po, most of them get warnings.
