The kind of problem that could only happen to me....

Ok, this is the strangest thing I have come across. My garage door remote will not work while my Jeep is running.

Here is what I know so far:

My remote will consistently work when the Jeep is off. My remote will work when my roomate's car is on. My remote used to always work with no problems, but now it will only work occasionally (almost never) when the Jeep is on. My remote also has a brand new battery.

My roomate's remote does the exact same thing as mine, so I can safely rule out the remote as being an issue.

What do I do now? The only thing I have done recently to the Jeep is to change the fuel pump. Is it even remotely possible that the new pump is creating some kind of interference? I don't want to have to shut the Jeep off every time I need to use the garage.

Agreed. Your YJ is producing some sort of RF leak and it's interfering with the signal. I bet you could take your Jeep to someone who works for either a telecommunications service or radio repair service and have them go over it with an RF detector and tell you where the leak is.

Good luck.

I got a meter that will show where the leak is located. Any one that works on cellular transmitters will have one. So if you see them working at a site strike up a conversion. We use it to track errant signals

Does your cell phone start the washing machine when you use it?

Are you wearing your tin foil hat?

The plugs and wires are both nearly new and in good shape. I am in construction, so it probably won't be too long before I bump into someone who does IT work.

Thanks for the suggestions.

lay a piece of tin foil on the fuel pump elec connection and top of fuel pump panel and see if the opener works. on aircraft the wires are shielded to keep the fuel fumes from being ignited from stray current. might not be too safe to drive it around. just a thought. do you get any feed back or buzzing in your speakers?

Ok, here's my take as a industry professional (radio, not garage doors). Amazingly enough, the fuel pump could be causing the problem. A lot of fuel pumps run off of RF. Something to do with changing with the frequency of the car engine. The engine and the fuel pump both create some RF interference, that's why when you're driving you can turn your radio to AM and tune it between stations and sometimes hear the whine that rises and falls with the speed of your engine. CB radio's and Ham's do it even better. I'm not sure where you'd go to get one, but they make RF surppressors that may take care of the problem.

^As just a matter of curiosity, what happens if you rev up your engine and try to trigger the remote?

You guys might think it to be funny, but I have had the exact same problem. I have to bang the remote in my Jeep and "click it" about 10 times in order to get it to work. I have traded it out with my wife's and the same thing happens. I thought it was just the vibration of the Jeeps tires causing the stupid thing to dislodge the battery connection. I would like to know the solution to this as well.

hey just to update, my remote has been working for the past couple days. I did just install an amp/sub so maybe I knocked something back into place when I was doing that? or maybe the fuel pump needed to settle in? or maybe the electrical gremlins that seem to always haunt me decided to take a few days off?

This is just the strangest thing, but I only hope it keeps working.
