The Quest continues

After months of trolling this awesome forum and learning all that I can as well as looking at several Wranglers of different years and models I hopefully have found " The One ". I'm not wild about the color but everything else is good. Did a VIN search and checked out her history, all is well. Have grilled the owner relentlessly via txt and email and all seems to check out. It means a little road trip but for " The One " I figure that is part of the experience. She's a 95 with the 2.5 / 5 speed with 112k. Any last words of advice from anyone?

There isn't anything wrong with the 2.5 , just don't expect a highway cruiser. The main thing is to look for a rust free non abused machine that has been somewhat maintained.
Good Luck with your find and Welcome to the forum.

I have a 2.5 and cant run bigger tires with spending tons of money... weaker engine weaker transmission... I love my jeep and I will keep it... But after reading and learning all the info at this forum I now wish I waited and purchased a I6. If your happy with spending lots of money upgrading things or running stock tires.... Then by all means purchase the 2.5.... Its up to you. Enjoy

+4 - wait and get the 4.0L.
(this is coming from someone who did a 2.5L to 4.0L swap earlier this year)

All of this is very true with the exception of, even if you have the 4.0L motor, you still can't run bigger tires without spending "tons of money".
At least not properly anyway.

The 2.5L has enough power to get the job done, if geared correctly or if the correct tire size is chosen. I ran 30x9.50 on my 93 4 banger with stock gearing, and it did alright. Then I switched to 33" and 4.88 gears, and notice virtually no change to the performance of it. The AX5 is the weak link in the drivetrain, but the 2.5L doesn't produce enough horsepower to hurt it. So it works.

I will expand on this.

I drove a '90 TBI 2.5L around for almost 9 years on 33's
I loved my Jeep, but always dreamed of having more power.
I started saving parts for a 5.2L Dakota/Durango/Grand Cherokee/Ram engine conversion.
I got rear-ended in December, my '90 YJ was totaled.
I replaced it with a '93 with a 4.0L and 3:08 gears
I was VERY impressed by this new-found power.
I swapped my axles and wheels/tires and lift kit from the remains of my '90 (this gave me 4:10 gears, 33's and 3.5" lift).

I will NEVER again buy a Jeep with a 2.5L the difference is night and day, its a whole new animal. A MUCH more enjoyable driving experience.

I destroyed my D30 racing a Cummins.
I WAS RACING MY JEEP! it is that powerful!
Swapped in an 8.8, (same axle I was planning on swapping into my '90) and now I can chirp first, econd and third gears.

I still have the Trans and bellhousing I (was saving for my 5.2L swap (NV3550)).

Moral?
The 2.5L is a great engine if you just want to drive, its low RPM torque is good for off road.
The 4.0L does everything the 2.5L does, but SO MUCH BETTER its unbelievable!

You can see both my Jeeps in the threads linked in my sig.
You can see all the mods done to both, and what went from the '90 onto the '93.
You can watch my progress, see the damage, and see the new one grow, and continue to grow as I am always working on it as all Jeepers do.

I had 30's on my 2.5 5 speed for the last 6 months and can barely get freeway speeds and lose 5mph on overpasses small ones constantly shifting up and down... I just went with stock size AT tires 215/75/15 on my Jeep and there 2 in smaller and the little 2.5 5 speed now drives like a normal vehicle. The Difference between Daylight and Dark. Im just going to enjoy it as it was built and designed for = quit trying to make it do something it was not designed to do. Im glad I own it my 10 year old son really enjoys it and I guess that all that counts.

Update: I guess the term " Clean , Clear title in hand " is subject to interpretation. The old girl was in decent shape and looked pretty good. She drove fine and I crawled under it and poked and prodded in all the right spots. A little rust here and there but not much and none in critical places. In short I could live with it and could see her potential. Well after driving an hr and a half to get there it turns out there was a problem with the paper work. We had corresponded back and forth and I was assured all was well, WRONG! I had even done a vin search and checked her history. The seller had the title but his name wasn't on it and it didn't have current tags and there were just several inconsistencies in his story and I didn't have the warm fuzzy's, so I walked. It really chaps my butt when people say stuff isn't a big deal. If it isn't a big deal then why haven't you done it? Rant Complete As far as the 2.5 part goes this jeep would just be a DD for the fun of it. If I can find a 4.0 in my price range I'll jump on it but for what I want I think the Little Jeep that Could would be fine. So the seemingly unending search continues.........Oi Veh!

Good Luck, and I've bought and sold many cars over the years and I know what you mean," if it isn't a big deal then why haven't you done it"! Because it's going to be a Big Deal, and bigger when you add a 3rd. or 4th. party.
