The YJ Guide

Well, I'm making this post to help some of the newcomers understand what they have, and provide a few great resources. This isn't a guide that has my advice, or my opinions...just straight facts about whats in your Jeep.

Engines:

6 Cylinders
4.2 L AMC 258 was used from 1987 to 1991
4.0 L AMC 242 from 1991-1995

4 Cylinders
2.5 L AMC 150

Transmissions:
6 Clyiners

Manual-
Peugeot BA-10 1987-1989
Aisin AX-15 1988-1995

Auto-
TF999 1987-1992 Non lock up
TF999 1992-1995 Electronic Shift
The electronic shift years could be wrong.

4 Cylinders

Manual
Aisin AX-5 1987-1995

Automatic
TF904 1994-1995

Transfer Case
Some YJ's from 1987 came with the NP207, the rest came with the NP231

Towing Capacity:
Frame is rated to pull 2,200 pounds.

Axles
Front
D30

Rear
D35

Differential Gear ratios
6 Cylinders
3.07 or 3.55
From everything I've see, these are the most common. If someone could
throw some more numbers out there with years, that would be great.

4 Cylinders
4.10

I am in need of a engine control unit - are you able to helt me?
My Car is a jeep wrangler 2,5L from 1995 (4 cylinder) - chassis nr 1J4FYN9PXSP274844
Car is registrered in Denmark - imported from Germany in 2001

The unit that is defekt has the following numbers printed on it:

I have tried to contact several spare part dealers but the response is they dont have that part or they dont know which car it is from the number I have given...

I noticed the TJ thread had something similar, so I suppose the YJ thread might need it as well.

I think that we all could have used something like this when we first got our jeeps.

Help! Got my rear differential drained and a new gasket on, but now I can't get the fill plug out to put new gear oil in it! Any suggestions?

Tried using a 3/8 breaker bar but it's not budging!

Soak it in PB blaster over night. Try again tomorrow.

Always take the fill plug off first!

List looks good, the only 3.55's I have ever encountered were in pre 91 models...and they are few and far between. In the last 20 6 cylinder jeeps I have had, only 2 of them had the 3.55's

Ihave a 91 yj with a 2.5 liter engine, I noticed that you stated the frame toweing capacity was 2200 lbs, I was curious If my 4 cyl would have a problem towing that much weight.

The info really helped out. I have a 95 wrangler also and want to put a shackle lift on it what would you recommend in terms of how big to go with shackles?
