Ok, this morning on my way to work my Jeep totally died. It was not quite warmed up yet but the weird part was it just lost power and shut off. I coasted to the side of the road and tried to restart it. It sounded like the battery was dead or dying when trying to restart, like it almost wouldn't turn over. I also noticed the oil pressure guage was jumping from 40 up to max and then back. Ok, vehicle stats:

1990 Jeep Wrangler
4.2 I6
Carbuerated fuel source

It has been running great as of late but this morning was really weird.

Any ideas??

alternator, or maybe (hopefully) the alternator belt.

My brothers Porsche used to do it all the time when his tension bolt was stripped. all the sudden the lights would dim and the car would stall. Hopefully you can just re-tension the belt. Good luck.

if you want to test the battery try running it without it. A Jeep will run with no battery with only the alternator as a power supply. Disconnect your negative battery lead and jump start it without a battery in place. If any of the plates within your battery have fused you will have the same problem and it will run fine without (you can't use many electronics or restart it after it's turned off though). Usually if a battery fuses though it happens when cold cranking, not while running. Still though, the cheapest solutions are the preferred.

UPDATE** Ok, I took it to Kragen and they did a system test and it said everything was fine, however, I noticed my voltage gauge kept getting lower and lower. I took it home, took the cables of the terminals and gave them a good cleaning and replaced them. I took it to another Kragen and they said the charging system was good but the battery was bad so I replaced the battery. I'm going to keep an eye on it though, just to make sure. Thanks for all the help!!
