I have an 87 with the 4.2 Right now I have some old LT245/75R16 that came with the Jeep when I bought it. The tires are due to be replaced but since I am on roads most of the time. I don't think I need the modern version of these tires. Recommendations?

Are you asking for size or brand recommendations? For sizing a 30x9.5 fits stock YJ's pretty nicely. As far as specific tires brands, everyone will have different recommendations. Since it's a DD I would suggest a mild all terrain. That will be the most quiet and have the best road manners behind a real street tire

I would say you are going to have to stick with a 16" tire. My question is how did you find a 16" rim that had a 5X4.5" bolt pattern. Those seem to be few and far between.

The 245 tire that is on it is about equal to a 31" tire. Stock is a 215 and that's about a 27" tire. The one that is in between them is a 235, but for all the more that you are going to lose in power, I would stick with the 245.

As far as which brand? For an all season radial, I am a fan of cooper tires. I have STT's on my pickup, but they are more of a mud terrain.

If it were me, I would shop the websites like tirerack.com or tiredepot.com, and pick out something that you like. There are so many different brands, and so many different warranties. I would think it would have to be more of a personal choice than a voting of the masses on here.

Yeah, I was going to stick with the same size tire, they seem to be a good size. I know they are larger than normal but they seem to fit fine. I just have been told they are not the best for daily road driving. I think the jeep has been lifted but, how much I don't know. I don't even know how to figure that out. As for the bolt pattern being rare. The Craig's list add said the wheels were from a newer Jeep.

You sure it's not 15" rims? I have had great wear, ride, and traction with BFG AT KO. They seem to last forever. I'm now trying Goodyear MTR's but those are more off road tires than the AT KO.

If your looking for an aggressive tire yet goes down the road nice I recommend my yokohama's , I have them on my zj and that's my dd highway driver yet I have a mud pit behind my house and they haven't gotten me stuck yet. They are 31/10.5/15's and the ride awesome, aren't loud and like I said I have never been stuck yet. My yj has 33/12.5/15's bfg all-terrains and they are honestly just as good for a dd and I have yet to get it stuck either so either are my recommendations as a dd tire

Those are Moab's from a TJ Rubicon. I have the same wheel. Looks really good on the YJ.:D
I run a 265/70R16 General AT2 about the same size as 31x10.5R16 but a little lighter than an LT tire. With a 4.0L, 5spd and 3:07 gears 5th is almost useless. I do have spacers but I could get away without them... only slight rubbing at full lock. The extra width of the tires and spacers gives the jeep a nice stance tho.
I really like the tires. Very little road noise... good in the rain... great in the mud... don't know about snow, stored for the winter. They have about 15,000km(9,000 miles) on them and show very little wear. They also had very good ratings on Tirerack.

One last thing I live in Phoenix AZ. So snow is not an issue and Rain only occasionally during the supposed monsoon season. The big thing for me is just lasting ability. Supposedly our hot summer asphalt shortens the life of tread on tires. So I need something that is supposed to last, and just know they will have a little shorter life here.

I have an 87 with the 4.2 which is now my daily driver. Started off as a toy and now I can't stay out of it so it's a true DD. I'm running these. Nexen Roadian Mt's and I'm very happy with them plus they go well with the military theme. I think they are very quiet on the highway but without a top or doors it's maybe a little hard to know. Can't beat these tires for a hundred bucks a throw at Walmart lol lol lol

I have been daily driving on the Cooper AT/3's for 4 months now and really like this tire. Minimal road noise even at highway speeds. Have yet to get off-road but feel they serve well there also. They are slightly lighter than other tires of same size and with my gearing, 3.73, was concerned with extra weight. These tires weigh about 20 lbs apiece less than similar.

I have BFG's on my YJ. When I got it, it had 31's, now with my lift it has 33's. I suppose they could be better on slippery stuff, but they aren't any worse than most other tires will be. When you consider it for what they are (all terrain all season), they really are a good tire.

On my truck I have Toyo A/T Open Country. This is a very good tire in all conditions. I have a hard time breaking the rear end of my truck loose with these, even on ice and snow. I haven't taken it off road with those tires, but I'm confident in the tread design that it will do as well as the BFGs. As for tire life, I've only put a few thousand miles on them, but they ride well and are relatively quiet.

Just to update I ended up going with the Cooper Discover ATP's. I immediately notice the ride is much smoother, but that is to be expected coming from the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's. Anything more it will be months before I can have an opinion but so far they ride good and look good.
