Tires and Wheels

Like many of the posts I have seen, I too am new to the incredible world of Jeep and although I have had my 1994 YJ for about 3 years, I am finally beginning to think about upgrading it.

I have long list of things I'd like to do, but new wheels and rims are at the top of it.

Do I need to lift it to make it a serviceable light to mid duty off-roader? I have two very young kids, so I don't see any heavy duty craziness in my future, but I'd like to move out of the stock rims and tires.

Can I improve the look and the off-road effectiveness without lifting it?

What are the largest tires / wheels that can go on a stock YJ?

Any suggestions or do I just have to bite the bullet and lift it?

I was running my 93 YJ with worn springs and 31s BFG A/T. The little Jeep went everywhere in that condition. The rims I have are the basic aluminium American Racing rims. I did get a fair bit of rubbing on the fender flairs though. I recently lifted my Jeep 4" but have not had a chance to take it out since the lift. Check craigs list for rims/tires for good pricing. A lot of people get 31s stock on vehicles then want to go bigger and sell what they have for super cheap. To get an idea of what a stock YJ can do, take a look at the So Cal Meet and Greet thread. I went places a mountain goat would not like and only needed a pull/tug a couple of times.

Good luck with your choices and show us some pics of what you decide to do.

Jeff
