tj flares on yj

I'm thinking of buying the rugged ridge flare kit and putting it on my yj. What does this involve?

I put stock tj flares on my yj. I had to trim the body up a bit in the rear and trim the front back a bit. I also had to drill new mounting holes. It opened the wheel wells up and I got rid of the plastic in the rear. I sprayed undercoat to the wheel wells to make them black instead of stock white.

So is this worth the trouble?

If you enjoy working on your jeep like I do, it is. I like the look so much better and it opened our up more so I can stuff my tires further up. It's not to bad of a job, couple hours. It customizes your jeep how you like it.

I used vice grips to hold them on the body and marked and measured twice to cut once.

I cut it twice and it's still too short!

I’m thinking about going the TJ route but going with the new 4.75” TJ flares that Rugged Ridge makes. Anybody use them or installed a wider TJ flare?

Yes they will give you more room but you're gonna have to cut to fit any kind of TJ flares.

I plan on cutting them to fit regardless. But is there a big enough difference cause I would then have to get marker lights also?

I'll just say this. I cut mine and ended up getting 2.5 inches in the front and 2 inches in the rear.

No reason for new marker lights. Just extend your existing wired to the tj marker lights.

I will probably end up buying new flares not used (unless I find used ones) so I would need lenses

You can probably find them on c - list for cheap if your patient and keep an eye out. There was a set earlier this week here (Reno Nv.) for $30. I managed to score 2 sets for free about 2 yrs ago when I did mine. 1 set regular and 1 set of Rubicon flares.

This is the time of year when stock flares pop up left and right. Since people buy tube fenders and bigger flares with refund checks Also check local club forums. I picked up some rubicon flares for free on a local club site

Here in Kansas on c-list the only ones I have found between what's being ask for them and how far I have to go to get them I'm better off with eBay. Finding used parts here is not always easy
