To buy or not to buy

Eager to own a project Wrangler and need your advice.

I came across this 1987 Jeep Wrangler from my colleague. Can you give me your opinion if its worth the investment of a project jeep?

I'm a technologist by profession but have worked on cars in the past. Minor modification but nothing of this magnitude. Plan on working on this with my brother who is very mechanically tuned.

Goal is to have a rig that can take me into the wood for my hobby/passion; hunting & hiking.

Seller is asking for $450.00; Hard top has missing back windows. Front seats are ruined and need to be replaced. Radiator cap is missing along with the battery. Thank you in advance for your time and advice. Budget will be $1400 to get this running.

I would say its worth 450. Did it run when parked and how does the frame look? As long as it would be fairly simple to get running and the frame isnt rotted out I would say you could have it on the road for less than 1400. Around here just the full doors are worth 450... Keep us posted and welcome to the addiction!

At worst tons of parts for your future projects. There a lot of $ in parts from that rig.

If you decide you don't want to use it for a project, grab it up and pass the deal along to someone here... It is a deal regardless if it runs or not. Just sayin'

Thank you all for your help. Going to pull the trigger and pick it up on Saturday.

The frame is in great condition and the only area that has rust are the chrome steps and front bumper. The seller said he will do the tune up and try his best to get it running so I can drive it home rather than tow it. Wrangler owners sure are awesome.

This forum is terrific and thank you all once again. I hope to absorb your knowledge and post my progress. Also, the YJ Build section is truly inspiring!

Now onto Quadratec to get my wishlist of items sorted for Phase 1.

go slow and decide what you really want it to be before you start throwing money at it..it is much cheaper to just do it once

To me that Jeep is for sure worth $450. Even if the frame was rotted I would part it out but thats not what you are looking to do. Hard to tell if $1400 will make it the Jeep that you really want. If you have to go maybe replacing brakes, tires, brake lines, exhaust, that back window, doing something with that carburetor...........the total can start to add up pretty quick. Take a good look at the frame too, if it doesnt look good then if I were you I would pass on it.

Harleydragon, I think you misunderstood me. I WOULD buy it myself even if the frame were rotted. I just wouldnt advise some one to buy one with a rotted frame unless they were going to part it out or were looking for a major project. I didnt get the impression he wanted to do either of those.

Exactly what he said^^^^^^^

Get it running and driving and go run the type of terrain your interested in a few times. See how it does and start planning from there...
