Total newbie first Jeep question...

I just picked up a 94 2.5L with 116,000 on the odometer. Everything seems to run fine except the temp guage doesn't appear to be reading correctly. The guy who sold it to me (local reputable smog shop owner) said that he installed an aftermarket temp guage and that it is reading fine. I've only driven it for a day or so and for a total of about 20 miles. Under the hood where the sensor is installed has an odd brass t-joint for the sensor in the block and I am concerned that this is the reason it may not be reading right.

If this picture is alarming or unusual, what would you guys recommend?

Any help is appreciated.

Congrats on the purchase ! I'm not sure what that "contraption" is but your temp sensor should be located near the back of the block driver side

welcome, and that like you said, is a contraption. Not a mechanic, but that looks like a personal mod and should be checked out and changed to correctly read your temp. good luck and post back the answer.

Welcome to the forum. I'm tinking that the original owner owning a smog shop n all, probably did give that buggy a vacuum or smog mod and it's probably working great. I'd simply ask him what is this? Jeep owners are usually pretty kool on that level. unless of course you already have strained relations. or you have discovered it on your own. Good Luck.

I am not sure just what the factory sensor was for, but what he apparently did was to install a nipple into the housing where the original sensor was. He then installed a T and reinstalled the original sensor into the T side. The reason I say that is because that connection looks like a fact ory connection.

He then installed a different sensor into the other side of the T and that is wired back into the cab. It should be connected to the gauge that he installed. There should also be a power lead and ground to that gauge. I would believe that is the gauge he is referring to when he says it is reading right.

that is not a stock setup for anything. the T and nipple look like they came from the home depot plumbing section

the front sensor is for the computer

there should be a sensor at the back of the block for the gauge

they added a second sensor to the front port either for an electric fan controller or the sensor in the back may have broken off and they couldn't get it out

Thanks guys, that makes a lot of sense. I will get another few pictures to post in here. I'm going to meet him in a couple of hours to grab the 5th Alcoa wheel and tire, as well as 5 other rims and tires (street) that came in the deal.
