I have a transfer case rear output leak. NOT transmission fluid I thought it was transmission but with some research I found out it is not.

The transfer case runs ATF in it.

Pretty simple fix. Drop the rear driveshaft. Use a flat blade screw driver to pop out the old seal, or a seal tool if you have 1. (I don't). Use some black permatex and put a light coat on the metal surface of the new seal anywhere it touches the tail shaft cone. Re-install with light taps of a hammer. Use some new ATF and coat the seal (rubber part) then re-install rear driveshaft. Go wheeling!

I always take some emery cloth and go over the slip yoke just to clean it up a bit and inspect it for burrs or something that would've made the previous seal go bad. Then give it a light coat of ATF on the outer side where the seal rides before installing it into the slip yoke seal.

You are looking for the rear output oil seal for the NP231 transfer case. You'll also want to replace the bushing at the same time while the tail cone is off the t-case. I took the tail cone assembly to a local transmission shop and they were kind enough to replace the bushing and seal for free within a matter of couple of minutes.

Get part #'s 31 and 33 in this link: NP231 Transfer Case Parts - Quadratec

If the leak continues after replacing the bushing and oil seal, the culprit for the continued leak would be the slip yoke itself.

I had the same issue. I changed out the bushing and seal but still have a small leak. I'll be replacing the yoke before winter.

Me Too

I replaced the seal twice, still have a tiny leak :atomic:

I was wondering if a new yoke would solve that problem
