Tuffy center consule

Anyone use the "Tuffy" security center console with the stereo compartment?
If so, how do you like it?

I don't think it is worth it. One of the admin, khenderson, had one that was demolished when someone broke into it. I don't think it'll stop anyone from breaking in and it'll just be a bigger loss to you when they do break it.

My YJ had one in it when I bought it. Thing I like is it keeps the stereo locked up out of sight and has two cup holders. Stock radio still hangs in the dash. Sure someone can beat the heck out of the console trying to get in but if they are that determined nothing is going to stop them.

The lesson is not to keep anything in the Jeep unless your willing to loose it. The Tuffy box will keep your stuff secure from the typical casual crook.

+1 with Whitey. If they were able to demolish the console then they had far too much time, and/or the Jeep was in a place away from the public's eye. I imagine the noise that went into breaking into the box was considerable. That being said, since I replaced my piece o' crud plastic console with a similar steel console, I have not had any break ins. Then again I park in a fairly well trafficked lot...

Buy one you will be glad you did.
Make sure you get the correct width for a YJ (8") or it won't fit.

Amerijeep, did you ever post pics of your console? From the way you described it, it sounds good to me.

My ammo can special? It's nothin' really, but it works for me. I'll take some pics in just a bit, but don't laugh at my lack of vacuuming the jeep.

Here you go, Amy. It's rough, but everybody think it's really cool. Oh yeah, it is unfinished, but I'll put it up against a Tuffy.

Built for only $7. I had thought of paintin' it, but I just like the look the way it is.

Looks good to me, and handy. Hmmm, we've got a few ammo cans too.

There are cup holders on each side of the YJ windshield, so I have them already. I have cupholders to install on it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Airports and Car Pool lots any place where thieves know that the owner will be gone for the better part of the day or longer are the ones that are hit the most. My plastic console got busted into twice at a park n ride lot before I got my center console.

Casual thieves are the ones that metal boxes are designed to deter. Determined thieves with time on their hands will be able to get into them and that's the breaks. Again not trying to sound like a know it all but some folks don't have your skills or perhaps not the time or maybe they are just lazy like me but I figure that any solution that deters the casual thief is just as viable as your solution. It is very creative but a pair of bolt cutters could pop that lock on your box and get what they wanted.

Again a casual thief wouldn't carry them around and so the problem is solved but a determined thief...

PS that does look pretty cool. Where did you get the 40mm ammo box?

Those aren't the locks I plan to use long term, actually. I lock work for a living (among other things), and have come up with a design that would be more secure. If I ever take the time to put it all together, it should be pretty sweet.

I still haven't done some of the finishing work I want to do to it, but I really have grown to like the idea of it being on the rough side.

Oh yeah, I picked the ammo cans up at a local surplus place, and I have quite a few. The 40 mm I actually got on Ebay, though. I originally built it with a 50 cal. can, but it was really a bit tall and I wanted it to be longer.

Thanks. It also is exactly the right height as an arm rest. That's the only reason I put that cover on it. it would get too hot to touch in the sun. That cured the problem.

I have decided not to do any more mods to it. The beaten look is for me.
