Hi im undercoating my jeep and am currently in the process of grinding all the rust off the frame before i do, I was wondering if anyone could help me with what kind of under coat i should use, is just an enamel ok or am i better off using a special undercoat.

Once it rusts it seems to always come back. I like the por 15 or just black rustoleum. the actual undercoating stuff hides rust, so you wont notice till it's to late.

Por 15 is great for individual parts, brackets, and smaller parts.

Semi-Black Rust-Oleum, is a Jeep staple for most everything else (RattleCan or Brush On).

Get some wire brushes of various sizes, clean up the painting site from all the rust you can. The paint *will* cover up rusted areas, but if you can get most of the rust of the surface first, you'll be much happier with the results in the end.

Painted the frame of my 78 J-10 wioth rustoleum rusty metal primer 2 years ago. I wheeled, drove and general beat the hell out that truck off road. on rocks in creek and let it sit in a field for a year with out washing it and no new rust anywere on hte frame. Didnt even scratch the primer. Great stuff i would deff recommend it. I have the frame of my 96 dodge undercoated by ziebart and im not at all impressed with it. Needs to be touched up atleast once a year. adn i dont wheel this rig at all just my DD and plow truck.

Most auto parts stores sell Rubberized Undercoating which is easy to spray and stays flexible so that it won't chip or peel off. Por15 is excellent if you can do a frame-off repaint and use a brush, but difficult to work with if the frame is on.
Either way, preparation is key. You'll need to clean as much grease and grime off the metal as possible before painting. Go to one of those DIY car washes that have engine or tire cleaner and use it liberally underneath. Let it soak for 10 minutes then rinse with high pressure.
