used Jeep Help

Hey guys,

So I'm looking at this 1992 Jeep Wrangler. I'm gonna go see it today. The description says it has a new top, new 33" Tires with 3 In lift, new fenders, and a sound system. It has 120,000 miles and a new transmission. Thing is I don't know what to look for in terms of engine parts. The a/c doesn't work for example. I basically need to know what to look for in the engine to make sure he's not pulling my leg. Oil pump, water pump....etc? I don't know much about engines so I wouldn't really know what to look for so any help would be appreciated. I just gotta make sure the main things are working on the car so it doesnt stop working 2 weeks later. Again, just in the engine part of the car.

thanks in advance.

If you don't know much about engines, take someone with you who does. Or insist before you buy it that you take it to a mechanic for a good once over. The money you could save yourself is well worth an hour of a mechanic's time. Pay a little now, or pay a lot later!!!

oops sorry I hit send before I finished. check the oil on the dipstick look for any oil leaks check under the jeep for abuse of the under carriage or rot. Is this jeep in the north east? good chance it will have some significant rust or rot But your best bet is to get it to a mechanic like dare2bsquare said the price of an hour of a mechanics time could prevent you from being stuck with a baaaad deal. But good luck, and welcome to the forum
Cheers,
Bern

yay

Well I think I'm getting the Jeep. I took a good mechanic with me to go see the jeep and he checked it out. The drivetrain in the back is messed up but the owner has an extra one which, according to the mechanic, is in good condition and he is giving it to me for no charge. The transmission is new but has an installation problem so the mechanic is gonna fix that. It has brand new 33" Tires and rims, a new bestop full top and seat covers all for $3,300. I'm gonna put about $400 in all repairs. Thanks for all the advice, it really helped me make the best decision.

Congrats. We like pictures. When you get it - post em up!!!

For that price and the new stuff on the jeep, if it doesn't work out for you, part it out and you should make most of your money back.
