Used vs Rebuilt transmission

Transmission went on my 94 2.5l (ax-5)... sounds like someone spilled a box of bolts inside the box.. thinking a gear shattered. My mind says buy a collins rebuilt unit for 1200 bucks and get the 1 year warranty. My wallet says grab a used or a rebuilt unit from a cheaper source. What experiences have you guys had? I saw a used one with 89k miles on it for 400 bucks from one of those places that parts out jeeps. Another place that parts out jeeps and has a shop says they rebuild the units but only has a 90 day warranty and lord knows if they even took the unit apart.

I'm itching to get the jeep back on the road but I don't want to spend money needlessly. I put a rebuilt motor in about 6 months ago so I'm already balls deep on this one haha

appreciate the opinions or if someone has a better source/idea

I have a 95 with an AX-5 and it locked it in neutral when it spit out a syncro key.
I purchased a used AX-5 with 68K on it for $450 while it does work it doesn't shift like I think it should and I believe it needs synchronizer rings. I have purchased a kit that cost me $150 and my tranny guy says $500-600 labor if I hand him the tranny so if you add it all up I should have bought a rebuilt tranny or converted to an AX-15. After all that I still have a weak a$$ed ax-5.

Do the AX15 upgrade. It's a waste of money to put the AX5 back in because it will end up the same way. It's not a hard upgrade and will take whatever you throw at it.

The upgrade requires a Dodge Dakota 4 cyl bell housing , a special clutch plate and pilot bushing, an AX-15 tranny and a transfer case or replacing the input shaft. Since the AX -15 is longer drive shaft lengths will have to be changed (longer front and shorter rear).

if you want to stay stock go to www.ax-5.com.

$850 for a 1yr warranty and $1250 for a 2 year warranty on the AX5 trans.

The best way to upgrade to an AX15 is to get a complete trans/t-case/skid plate out of a TJ. Then all you would need is to get a bell housing out of a Dakota 2wd, and new drive shafts. As well as a custom clutch disc.
