Thumbs up Werkin the bugs out

my last post involved my 95' four banger w/ 4" lift& 33" tires. Im going to gear-up my 4:10 axel to a 4:88...now in doing that im suspecting that will deliver more power to the wheels to bring my rig back to its original speed performance (after lift my speed dropped to 65mph topped out due to lack of power to push the much larger wheels) Now my concern is, will gearing up produce too much added stress to my tiny engine? (and cause engine breakage) Do I have to do something to the engine to compensate for the gear change to handle the new gear load?

Nope, you shouldn't have any issue and there isn't anything you need to do to your engine (except normal engine maintenance). The axle gearing will actually help your engine not have to work as hard to maintain the speeds that you are asking it to. The one thing you will want to do is to maintain the gear oil in your diffs. Changing it every few thousand miles or after you have gone through continuous mud/water will help keep everything fresh and working properly.

(TO:daddy jeep)sweet, Id be glad to help you out, just pay shipping and they are yours...although Im trying to figure out just when Im going to do the diff's. (Im doing it myself so Im learning from a mechanic right now) plus i gotta save up $$$ for the gears and a locker...might go air or cable engaged type due to having to drive jeep as main vehicle. And thanks for all the help and advise guys!

Glad to see you got it figured out! If you have the $$$ ARB's are bulletproof, just make sure you route all the plumbing out of the way so it doesn't get snagged every time you drive through the bush! Good luck, keep us updated!

Has any one here switched out there own gears? So far I've done all mods,and I gotta keep it that way... If I get broke out in the middle of nowhere, I gotta know I can handle the repair. I have learned so far that there is a metered tool to check the allignment of the ring gear, and a creme paste to check the pin/ring "mesh"/allignment...Does anyone know where I can get these? Local car parts store just scratch their heads...And the shimming seems easy enough...

it seems easy enuf but in reality the shims go on before the bearings on the carrier so you will have to keep pressing on and off the bearings till you get the shims right for the gear mesh if you can press the old ones off without breaking them hone the inner races out till they just slip on and use those bearings for the shim set up when you got the mesh the way you want it then press on the new bearings if you do it yourself take your time gears that arent set up right will die very quickly

Thanks for the advice...I'll be sure to hone out the old bearings .If not for 40 bucks I can get a whole 2nd set.If I get stuck, I know I can just fling money at it to make it go away...
