Bought my '89 YJ -

Picked up the YJ yesterday. Shop bought it from the original owner, '89 with 42k original miles. I'm new to the world of Wrangler but looking forward to getting into the thick of things. Here's the build as is:

1989 Khaki Metallic Jeep Wrangler Laredo

4.2L Inline 6 cyl

5 Speed Manual

MOPAR Performance Fuel Injection Conversion

Dual Optima Yellow Top Batteries

WARN Dual Battery Isolator

Dana 44 Front and Rear Axles

ARB Front Locker

WARN Locking Hubs

ARB Compressor

4 Wheel Disc Brakes

CURRIE High Steer Conversion

3/4 ton Steering Components

Twin Stick ATLAS 2 Transfer Case

MEAN GREEN Starter

BLACK DIAMOND X2 6" Long Arm Coilover Conversion

Bead Lock Wheels

35x12.50 BFG AT's in Front

35x12.50 Goodyear MTR's in Rear

CURRIE Axle Shafts

WARN Differential Covers

The AC is dead. Confirmed power is coming to the unit but it's a lost cause. With the Houston summer heat/humidity about to hit, it's at the top of the list of repairs. It's the original R12 so I'm thinking my best bet is to just replace it all together. Any thoughts otherwise? It shifts pretty well, but usually have to go to second before reverse. Can anyone give me some insight into the problem and how long I have until that trick doesn't work? Interior has bed liner so no mats or rust. Besides a new radio and AC unit, it's pretty much good to go after I flush and change all the fluids. Any and all guidance and to do's are welcome.

Well this is more like "What I've done this month" but I put in my smittybilt stereo center console, relocated the stereo, took the hard top off, took the back seat out, put the soft top on, changed the sad old AMC starter, and installed some cargonetting over my sport bar. Next up: Fluid Changes and camping

Got the t-case refilled after changing out the rear output seal and bushing. Folded down the soft top and figured out how to put on the bikini top that came from the PO. Had to add the corner snaps, but other than that it fits well. I had no footman loops in the rear of the tub, so I ran the straps under the rail of the soft top mount. That should work until I get proper loops installed

New front pipe, cat, muffler, and tail pipe. Changed the transfer case fluid, checked trans fluid, and topped it off with oil.

Security and Tune Up

I replaced the stock glove box with a Tuffy security box. There was no way I could get the original screws out so I took a hacksaw and some bolt cutters to the origina box until I got enough of it out of the way to get at those (#*^%$ screws. It was actually pretty quick and easy once I decided to destroy it.

The new one went in very easily per the instructions.

This was the fourth security upgrade for Jeepin' with the top off that I've made. First is a box between the rear fenders which can only be accessed through the tailgate..which locks. The Jeep came with that box. It uses the seatbelt bolt to secure the box to the vehicle

Second, I added a 15" W, 11.81" D, 11.81" H Stack-On safe with digital passcode. It is bolted to the floor behind the passenger seat. It makes a great place to stash handguns if we decide to stop at the grocery store on the way home from plinking...or to lock valuables while we go for a hike.

Third, I drilled through the passenger seat scissor mount so I can put a padlock though it. That prevents anyone from moving the passenger seat forward to even see the safe.

Finally, the Tuffy glove box for things that we want to be more accessible.

I also changed plugs, wires, distributor and rotor today.

I also swapped out the odometer gear for what I thought was the right one...but the speed is off more than before. I have 4.10 gears and 35" tires. The chart said I need the 33-tooth gear. The 35-tooth I took out was closer to actual speed reading but both read higher speed than actual speed. I guess I'm officially in uncharted territory on that.

Any suggestions?

Nothing this week. Blew jeep money to work on my wife's car, just turned 100k: front suspension work, rear brakes, new plugs. Paid to have plugs done. Pulling the intake to get to the back plugs (V-6) was a bit above my confidence level and I didn't want to screw it up.

Got to work this weekend. Had my brother, dad and brother in law drive into Houston from Atlanta. Replaced the power steering pump, new spark plugs, installed some Polk Audios and got rid of the factory speakers, headlight relay mod and installed the KC windshield mount with Warn SDB 160's. A little wrench time and some beers with good company.

Started to install my neww rock climber/tire carrier and everything was going great until the last bolt. You know the ones that bolt onto the bottom of the frame!? Yeah, I broke off one of those. So yeah after drilling, trying to use the "easy-out," I snapped the it off in the hole. With that, I got my angle grinder and made a precision cut to basically muscle the welded nut out. With that said, I'll be welding a new anchor nut in there tomorrow though I may devise a metal plate with a nut welded to it so I can make a floating nut plate.

This week I bought my first wrangler. I have had a couple mid 80's cherokees but never a wrangler.

Sorry for any typos. Sending from phone.

--95 wrangler Rio Grande. 135,000 miles.
--No body damage
--Good paint job (a couple of minor issues on hood is it.)
--no major mechanical issues.
--minor issues will cost less then $100 for parts.
--barely used besttop w/scratch free smoke color plastic
--my jeep mechanic (also a good friend doesn't believe it has ever left the road.
--brand new, bottom of the line, stock tires
-- interior in great shape. Pretty new jvc stereo and jenson sound bar.
--vehicle looks like it is all stock except milk jugs removed. Dealer put on bad replacements.
--leased for two years then purchased. So only one or two owners.
--in Colorado wranglers often exceed kelly blue book value because of high demand.
-- blue book is $5,993. Dealer was asking $5875. I paid $4800

I have:
A roomate with a full garage including cherry picker and a crazy moded 83 cj,
a good friend with ten years as a jeep and 4x4 mechanic who looked really closely at the jeep, with me during test drive,
A good friend who is an expert metal fabricator,
A high school friend who has been a jeep guy since high school and works in parts department of a major dealership.
And another buddy who works at AutoZone.

Overall a very good week for my new yj!

I sprayed my 8.8 to see if I like the hammered paint finish. Which I do like so I'll have to strip the paint off the tubes before I weld up perches and weld the tube to the housing then I can repaint it.

Bought some new tires for the winter. Actually went down two sizes to 31s to get some of my top end back. Very happy.

Beside rebuilding the rear driveshaft, working on rust repair, and trying to polish up my crappy soft windows, I'm trying a little experiment: I'm going to drive and shift according to the shift light whenever possible to see how it effects mileage. Just doing it for shits and giggles. Curiosity has gotten the best of me!

Funny, I've thought of doing that too but people would hate me because of my even slower slow acceleration.

Got some things done this week

Was able to do a few projects on the Jeep this week. I bedlined the center caps of the wheels, installed a new RC steering stablelizer, wrapped the rusty headpipe and tailpipe with header wrap, installed polyurathane shock bushings, and installed my new Husky toolbox.

Was going to order a headlight harness, but yesterday a brief power outage fried the main board of our refrigerator. So, harness money is going to replace the main board of the fridge. It's always something!

What I did to my YJ this week

Fabbed some custom battery cables with zinc plate terminals and 2/0 welding leads wrapped and sealed with pure rubber (?) 3M splicing tape then covered with harness loom for protection against oil and contaminents, used 4 guage wire to run to the fuse panel. Eliminated useless vacuum and solenoids in engine bay, bypassed vacuum switched front axle lock with a fabbed that locks the fork in place, changed oil with wix filter and used Rotella 10/30, pulled dash to revive indicator lights for turn signals, eliminated all other bulbs, installed interior led light with rare earth magnet for utility purposes, ACF-50'd 90% of key areas ( Anti-Corrosion Formula - 50 not quite the same as WD-40 higher protection and especially useful for electrical components e.g. distributor. Visit ACF-50 webpage, stuff is awesome. ) Converted side markers to led's custom jobbers using factory housings, polished paint and blacked out the hinges but left the torx heads red which looks pretty cool, added hood-to-windshield bumpers, removed platic bumper extensions on front, pulled factory scissor jack and plan on restoring it ( not for use though ) fabricated 16 foot parrot beak jumper cables using 2/0 welding leads and more 3M splicing tape to keep in lock box, bolted Rubbermaid Locking tote in place of rear seat until I custom fabricate a steel locker box, Herculinered entire tub. Can't wait to Por-15 entire frame and under carriage. Now off to do more!

ENJOYED IT! Took my wife for her first ride in the JEEP. We didn't go far, but she loved it. We went to a crawfish boil at a friend's house. The return trip home was a little after 1 am and chilly with no top on. LOL.

Put on a camo seat cover (DS), put new brakes (pads/rotors) on the front, and last but NOT least, installed an Aussie Locker in the rear diff. Locker took around 3 hours, made a incredible difference. Noisy s.o.b BTW.......BUT I LIKE IT.
