What I did to my YJ today

So after my long list of things to do for my jeep, I finally got the sway bar disconnects installed. I haven't tested them but I have noticed the appearance to be much different. For some odd reason I feel like I can take on the world. I am stock, though I run on 31" tires so it makes me wonder. hmmm.... Anywho...I will be trying to find the bushings for the JKs telescopic tracbar I've acquired to install in the next few days. I have pictures just need to extract them from my phone.

Info on the dicos, it was a pain in the behind to remove them!! That's all I can say about that. Installation was a cinch and I cannot wait to go "flexing" soon.

As I mentioned before I have cleaned the carb and valve cover, they were covered in heavy grease and grime and oil and dirt and basically everything under the sun. I'll post pics tomorrow. I'm getting summoned by the woman to come to bed. It's 0230am. hmmm.... ;-)

Jon what was it that you did not like about the RE4.5 lift?

#16,227 ·
It raised my jeep 6" and that was not going to get easier to climb into everyday.

It was super stiff and jarring over bumps or ruts. I am sure it would soften over time but I had read posts saying that theirs hadn't.

I figured that I know what stock is, now know what 4.5 is, I might as well know what 2.5 is. The RE 2.5 is regular duty springs and already broken in. Incidently the RE 4.5 and 2.5 came with the same monotube shock.

Just did what LuckyMac did - and I can't believe I didn't do this sooner - I put in a check valve on the suction side of the fuel pump last night. Ran it for a bit, and then let it sit today. Came out after work and she fired up as if it were fuel injected. First crank, good lord above it made me happy to have that happen!

Here's my experience in trying to cure the "Hard start after sitting for two days" or "Long cranking issue". NOTE, all the following pertain to a Carter BBD carb, with or without a stepper motor.
A few years ago one poster discovered that the factory inserts a small valve between the fuel filter and the return line to the gas tank (1988-1990 parts catalog-Page 470, Illustration #14-280. #8 within the illustration). The catalog calls the part a check valve. It tucks up inside the hose between the small outlet of the fuel filter and the metal return line. For most of us it was discarded years ago when a PO changed the fuel filter. The poster that discovered this suggested installing an aftermarket one way valve. Several of us did so with some success. For me, a plastic one way valve worked for a while, then it didn't. I tried a similar metal (aluminum) valve and it too, worked for a while, then it didn't. As years passed, I studied the fuel route from the tank, through the fuel pump, through the fuel filter and on to the carb and/or on to the overflow line. My reasoning was "something has to be sucking the fuel out of the carb fuel bowl. Maybe I have a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump". I replaced the fuel pump. No change. I added a one way valve at the fuel pump. That worked for a while, then it didn't.

The next thing I'm thinking of doing is capping off the bowl vent lines and blocking off the vent hoses to see if the fuel is escaping out the vent openings or out a poorly seating needle & seat. In theory, if the bowl is full of fuel, it will hold the needle valve shut, but if the float isn't just perfectly adjusted the needle valve won't seat and allow gasoline to be drawn back out of the bowl, through the fuel pump and into the tank. either by gravity or by vacuum if the tank vent line is blocked.

Whenever I think I found a working cure, I get some improvement for a while, then back to samo-samo. Since the issue is only a minor annoyance and only happens when I haven't driven the Jeep for a couple/few days, I just live with it until times like this when I'm embarrassed that someone follows a suggestion of mine and I expect he'll be disappointed after a few weeks when his Jeep reverts to it's old habits.

@pencilrunner please post again here in a couple weeks to let us know how it goes for you. I really thought I had it with the one way valve at the fuel pump. I hope your results are different than mine.

Good Luck, L.M.

Got notification that my new ECGS 489 axle was being delivered Tues so I started getting ready to slide it in when it arrives. Getting the e-brake cable catches out without damaging the little ears is proving to be the hardest part. Lol

Was hoping for my new axle to arrive today. FedEx was out of Trucks, Drivers or both so I'll be waiting for tomorrow.
Powerwashed the under side while old axle is out and did a little touch up paint on the springs instead.

Pictures like these make me miss CA. The mountains and lack of rust on cars are two positives of living there.

My Jeep is from a no salt area out West, but finding clean parts here is terrible.

Good luck on the install.

Got it at last is from Phoenix. We enjoy much the same advantages here in the metro Denver area. There's a lot of forum members that live in arid areas where there's not a lot of rust.
I'd be willing to take a look at local parts within reasonable driving distance from my home to examine parts that another forum member finds around here and would like to have them shipped to them. I would imagine that there's a few other forum members that would offer something similar. Having an unbiased advocate to take a look at parts that another member is considering buying might be great way to pay it forward for whatever benefits a member gets from this forum. A PM would be the way to begin the conversation.

Good Luck, L.M.

My Jeep is from the Denver area originally, then Boise, Fargo, Minneapolis (thankfully only a year) and then me in IA.

I’m fortunate for sure. I appreciate your helpfulness!

@JonStevens brings up a great point. Carfax reports give a good picture of the vehicles location history and things like emissions test history to alert you to potential issues when buying. Also gives you great negotiating points when buying.

Got my 500 break-in miles logged on the Odometer, While I was changing out the gear oil in the new axle I made an evening out of it and changed fluids in everything. Front and rear differentials, engine, transfer case, power steering and coolant. Didn't do the trans because I did that 2 months ago while I was doing the trans swap in the Sahara. While I was at it a new set of plugs, fuel filter, air filter and serpentine belt all found it's way off of the to-do list.

All ready for the AZ Trail season, planning on romping the Tonka a little tomorrow...

Oh great! Something else to do.
1- Yesterday at a light a guy pulled next to me and told me that my brake lights weren't working.
2- Jeep isn't running quite as strong as it has been. Time for new plugs.
3- Have a new noise (speed related, metal rubbing against metal)
4- Time to change the gear oil in the 8.8
5- And now, I have to change my summer air out for winter air. The weather here is still real nice. Perhaps I can drive up to Wyoming to get some winter air. Thanks Jon.

May not be the best viscosity for your climate, but ECGS strogly recommends Lucas 85-140 for their gearwork. I took their advice and burned my last 3qt's of valvoline 75-90 on the break-in and swapped over to 85-140 for both jeeps.
Something about the heat handling capabilities. $8.70 qt off amazon, .30 cheaper than autozone and it comes to the door.
YMMV

Today: Me and the Granddaughter went hunting & she learned how to drive a Jeep :)

No Deer, but did get a few rounds off with the M4 at a HUGE black hog running through the brush.

She looks too serious, better get her some more miles behind the wheel so she can enjoy the privelage of driving a YJ...

Took the Tonka out yesterday, New Axle performed as expected as expected, Rear disc brakes never locked up coming downhill on loose rock and steep grade as drums have in the past.

So the noise is gone, even with the new cowl seal? If so, Great!
On mine, the noise went away when I put a new cowl seal on but the noise came back as the seal compressed and wore. That's when I added a layer of adhesive backed weatherstrip, rather than another new cowl seal. Keep that in mind in case your noise returns.

Good Luck, L.M.
