That sir appears to be an anti-lock braking control unit. Although I'm not positive absolutely positive, I doubt that it will matter one way or the other. Since yours didn't have it in the first place there would be nothing for it to control. What year is the 4.0 and did it come out of a Cherokee? That seems to be what it should have come from from what I could find.

Hmmm.......looks like the YJ got anti-lock in 1992, but I'm not sure if it was an option or standard. Let me take a look through my pics and book real quick and I'll get back to ya.

I'm doing a 4.0 swap right now with ABS. That is the ABS control unit. It mounts directly behind your glove box. The wires that run to it won't be in your engine wiring harness

The other plug may lead to a little box under drivers seat. Not sure exactly what it is but it is something to do with the ABS

So apparently, anti-lock was optional. That explains why I didn't have it in my pics from the tear down. Because all rest of the system isn't there (i.e. hydraulic control unit, pedal travel sensor, acceleration sensor, or even wiring to wheel speed sensors that won't be there either), it shouldn't have any effect either way then, correct?

It shouldn't matter if it is just gonna be a engine swap. I have two 94 yj's, one being a wrecked donor. It is a 4.0 and has ABS, tilt steering and a few other things my 2.5 doesn't. So far I haven't ran into any compatibility problems.

That's what I kinda thought. Since there is no system to control, that controller really shouldn't matter then. Should be safe to leave out then.
