What is this?

I feel dumb asking this but I can't figure out what that metal piece on the corner is for?

It's the tailgate stop. It hits the spare when you open the rear gate.

Common sense can go a long way!

Don't think my tailgate has ever touched mine but damn nice to know it's there versus denting my jeep

I took mine off because I think it looks like crap. I'm aware it's been removed when I open the tailgate but accept the possible consequence of mushing a tail light if I ever get sloppy. But if you're really concerned consider screwing a nylon strap between the body and tailgate that limits how far it can open. It's your jeep .......... do whatever makes you smile.

There should be a rubber bumper on the end of it as well.
