whats the point?

ok, i know i just bought a jeep, but i would like to know.... what is the point of "supin up" a jeep if it will already do almost anything you want it to? see me personally, i am not going to go any bigger than 31.5 tires, no lift kit, not really much. i got a light bar, plenty of ground clearence and well like i said, it will go anywhere i want it to. so someone tell me, whats the point?

Hm, 1st time I have heard "supin up" for a jeep.. must be the french version. Anyway, you don't have to do anything if you don't want to. Those of us you do add stuff to our jeeps do it for many reasons, some like the look, some what to increase the ability(spelling?) for harder off road trails that 31's and stock suspension will not handle. But what ever you do or don't do is fine, its your jeep and the only one that has to be happy with it is you.. Btw, have you had it off-road yet?

You are right. A stock jeep is extremely capable off road right off the lot. But in my case I like to play in the rocks. So I needed suspension lift to clear the bigger tires so I can have more ground clearance. Then I wanted lockers after I tackled all of the rocks I could with open diffs. It is all a matter of preference. There are plenty of peopole here in AZ that are satisfied and challenged with some of the trails I would consider easier.

You say your jeep will go anywhere you want. Well I my idea of "want" is probably considerably different. As long as your enjoying the backcountry though that is all that matters.

yes i have had it off road, i was going up hills that other people had to fall behind because they couldn't make it. and i agree your idea of want is prob different, i don't do many bigger rocks, because i cannot afford to fix anything that breaks quite yet. lol, but the reason i asked was looking at the gas prices now, and that they are not going down anytime soon, this is my daily vechical and i don't know if i'd be able to afford filling it up every day, ya know. ight, work to do, ttyl

If you don’t mind we prefer to call it modifying or doing MODs or modifications:

There are three key things to doing the wheelin’ the tough stuff…
Approach Angle, Break over Angle, and Angle of departure; the ability to overcome these increase your ability to handle the larger angles thus more difficult off-road elements or off-roading maneuvers you can accomplish without damaging your equipment.

Armor, is the first modification or MOD most jeepers do to help protect their Jeeps as they begin to push the edge of the envelop of their Jeep’s ability and driving skills. This is a Baby MOD(s).

The only way to increase these critical angles is by lifting. Oh sure you could take off the bumpers off but that would only assist you with the Approach and Departure angle increase. The larger break over angle is what gives you Jeep the ability to go anywhere. The More Break over angle you can clear the more “Anywhere’s” you can add to your list. (BTW: The guy or gal with the longest list is the winner).

As the Jeep goes up so does the center, of gravity, now as you increase the height you need to make other MODs that allow you to develop a bit more suspension stiffness to minimize body-roll when you find yourself a bit off camber (Tilting).

One other reason for the MODs is to increase wheel or axle articulation in order for free wheels to keep firmer contract with the ground beneath you. This is done by disconnecting the anti-sway bars the quick disconnects make the process much faster and a great deal less painful.

Unfortunately as the Jeep goes up your MODs begin to create conflict in both your steering and driveline geometry. This can cause unpredictable performance and annoying driveline vibration. So we have fixes for this. Other MODs!

A suspension is only as strong as its weakest component so often as Jeepers do MODs we find the much more difficult demands on those components so we do other MODs.

The last obstacle most of us need to overcome is increased torque delivery. Torque is the twisting force produced by the engine the more power you can get to the wheels the more places you can go. Torque is the force that gets you moving horse power is what keeps you moving. As more torque is added often stress is now added to key driveline components. Thus more MODs a driveline is only as strong as its weakest link so bigger axles, larger differentials, beefier transfer case and so on.

MODs are a personal thing no one requires you to do them…you can stop when ever you want but, if you ever find your self stuck; I mean really stuck! and you were about to be rescued would you rather see a highly modified Jeep come around the corner or a stocker?

The Correct answer is a modified Jeep…Why because we have tow straps tools and most importantly know how.

Stay stock if you like none of us will ever mock you…Do you know why?

It’s a Jeep thing.

lol alright, i understand. and by the way, i'v learnd my lesson with stock jeeps this past weekend, i got stuck. wasn't really my fault or anything, just i fell into a sinkhole that was not noticeable. It was deep enough to sink my bumpers right under. and this was no ordinary sinkhole, there was no way out, it was like a straight drop! so i ended up having to not only get towed but we had to "lift" it out. but yea, i'm gettin some bigger tires, maybe a lift and some more armor before i really do anything else, i don't want to destroy my jeep.........after all i just bought the damn thing! lol

Pics?

Do you have any photos from your rescue?

Was it a stocker or Modified Jeep that assisted you?

nah i didn't get any pics, never brought a camera with me. it wasn't a jeep that had to get me out, we used some kids lifted chevy 4x4. he had mods on it, lifted with 33's or bigger, not sure it was night by the time he got there, lol. but he still stayed like 20 ft away from the jeep because he didn't want to get stuck, lol.

Yup, that's how it happens.

Newb: "My jeeps kicks ass just how it is"

Us (been there done that): "Okay, well have fun with it, but I like my built like it is"

Newb: "F'd up my rig. Time for some mods"

Us: "Nice, welcome to the club"

Got that right! Definately a journey: "The bigger your truck is, the farther off the road you will be WHEN you get stuck!"

yea, i think i'm gunna have to get a camera so that i can document everything i do to it. that wouldn't be a bad idea. i think the first mod i am going to get is most likely bigger tires, don't want much more than 32's though.

Well, there have already been a couple of posts about which lift we think is best, so you do have some research/debate to read through right here in this forum. You will need to lift your Jeep about 2-3", or do some "custom bodywork" with the sawzall to get your 32's to fit. Good luck!

Mods, this should probably move to the TJ tech section if we go down this road...

32's with the proper armor and a belly up skid will work out real well for you. If you plan on staying at the 32/33 range tire wise then you will want to go with a spring lift instead of just spring spacers. You won't regret it.

Just let us know what questions you have and we'll do our best to help out.

You would be surprised at what kind of deal you can get for used mods for your Jeep as your fellow Jeepers upgrade their Jeeps.

I know a guy that got a 3 1/2" RE lift springs, upper F&B adjustable control arms, drop pitman arm and TC drop kit with spacers for $60.00.

The seller was switching to a 5 1/2" Long Arm Full Traction kit. I'm not sure why he did not sell his shocks too???

So from that point all he needed was a set of shocks.

That’s not bad, a used 3 1/2" Rubicon Express kit with new shocks for about $400.00 that’s a deal!

i'm from rochester, NY. I don't think there are that many jeepers in my area, plenty of people who own jeeps, but there really isn't any trails near me, ya gotta drive like 2-3 hrs away to find anything good.

Catskills!

I know a guy that will be attending the Jeep Jamboree in the Catskills.

You should look into that...

It's one heck of an event and a great way to meet a lot of area Jeepers.

Do you want me to send you more info?
