Where's the love?

I have to vent here a bit... I am losing my love for my Jeep.

There is always something wrong, something that needs to be fixed, something that doesn't work correctly. I used to love the fact that it was basic transportation and you could work on it for an afternoon and then take it right into the woods and enjoy it.

Now, I just find myself frustrated because there is ALWAYS something wrong with it. I am having a charging issue now (latest thing - seperate thread), but along with that, none of my gauges work - NONE - only the clock. It's got a big hesitation when starting off in first gear, the brake light has been on for the past three months and I cannot get it to go off (even though I've replaced nearly everything in the system, including the sending unit on the master cylinder), the radio is broke, the valve cover leaks... it's just a pain now. A wife, two kids, a full-time job - the romance of working on this thing has passed, I fear.

I hope it comes back... I really do... but the way I feel right now, I just want to get a four-door sedan where everything works and be done with it. For all my making fun of our family car, I have to say - it always starts, everything works and has always worked, the heat is awesome and the radio is stock and grand. There's a lot to be said for all of that...

The old square eyes are almost 20 years old . . . kinda hard not to expect this kinda stuff. I can understand how the constant need to wrench can get old, especially when life gets busy. Might be time to sell the old YJs and get something a bit newer that won't have some of the same issues . . . I hear the JKs have 4 doors, working heaters, and radios!!!

Are you fixing everything yourself, or paying a mechanic to do it?
If you are paying, I can see how you would be frustrated.
Fixing the valve cover leak is cheap, and probably only a 1 hour job.
The radio, is it factory or aftermarket? Have you checked the fuses?
I would recommend you join a local Jeep/4WD club. They are always happy to lend a hand!

I agree its hard. I wrench eveyday and try to help here on the forum as well as side work and helping friends with thier stuff. THere are times when I just have to stop helping and sit back because it is easy to get frustrated and burnt out.
If it is a daily driver then I agree, clean up both jeeps fix what you can and sell them and get a newer jeep. Also your gauge deal can be your due to your charging system being inop. I gave you some info in your other post.
Step back and breath.:D

man i hear u on this but u have to just remember that summer is around the bend and how awesome it will be to cruise with the top and doors off. i live i the deep freeze and i just now have discovered that my t case is gone. so i get to pay 300 bucks to replace it myself in 20 below weather. but i know it will be worth it in the end when i get to the summer and i can go have my fun. hang in their bud

Hey ↑ thats enough of that!
Might be time to get rid of it & buy a newer one thats more reliable. Sometimes it's better to cut ur' losses & just go the whole hog :D buy a brand new one :punk:
bigger, smoother, more reliable, comfortable & last but not least, sleeker. ( I won't say slower but thats true shhhhh....)

well although i agree sometimes its easier to cut and run. u have already sunk money in and all the things hes having problems with are not that expensive, as its been said the valve cover is a hour job and cheap and the gauges probably need to be taken apart and cleaned that fixed all of mine when they were screwing up. and as far as the charging system sounds like hes narrowing it down very quickly.

If it was my DD, I'd probably get something else, but I would keep the jeep. Wrenching and whatnot is a lot more fun when you don't need to get it done that night to get to work in the morning, and as I'm sure most jeepers know, as soon as you start a project, you can expect to find many detours on the way to the finish line, some of which can be extremely frustrating, especially if you are trying to get things wrapped up.

x2 . . . I started to work from home and it sure is nice not having the stress of having to count on my Jeep to get to work everyday. I was cruising around in Front Wheel Drive for a week while my DS was rebuilt . . . no biggie, when you're only driving a few blocks to the store or drive thru!

take a minute to think about something. You just posted this and look at all the fellow Jeepers that came to your side . It is just like having a second family that is there in your time of disarray and confusion to help you get passed this and to see happy jeeping days ahead.
Now do me a favor and go to the Family Car forum and ask the same question and see if you get the same help and Love.
Now get your tool box go out to your Jeeps pat them on the hood and say your sorry and show them some love.

I read about someone getting out of jeeping once, & getting a family car. I don't know whatever became of him, or whether he ended up buying another jeep eventually.

I have read about many folks wishing they didn't sell the old heep & want it back in a bad way.

If you decide to keep it, here's what may help with the center gauge pod.
Guages not working

Daily driver? I gave up on that years ogo. My truck carrys that title and I drive my jeep when time and $$$ permit. Ha, it just rained here in CA (first time in 6 months) and I thought "what a great time to get the YJ out". After a few rounds around town I found my legs were soaking wet from the water leaking through the dash. Aaaaaggggghhhhhhh,

That's ok thought. My project list just got updated. (I will need an excape from xmas shopping next week).

Keep the faith

I am settling back down a bit, but what I wrote was the truth...

Thanks for the encouragement... I know I don't want to get rid of them - I know how much I love the summer. I guess having it as my DD makes it that much more frustrating when all these things are wrong.

I am taking a day off altogether :)

czjeeper - yes, I am fixing each thing myself, with some help from my brother at times. I already bought the cork valve cover gasket from NAPA, so that's going to be fixed soon enough. I have some day soff next week, so I'll take advantage of them.

Also, the radio is factory and the issue is that it shorts out all the time if you just BARELY touch the on/off knob - or if you hit a good bump. It is an AM/FM radio. I do have a Sony in my 1992 YJ that I may pull next week and toss it in this 1990. We shall see...
