Why I love my 2.5

Okay so I get it. I understand why everyone loves the 4.0. And lord knows I'd like a little more umph on the interstate too. However my love affair with Jeeps began with a 75 CJ with the straight 6. Later I bought a 79 CJ7 with a 304 and man let me tell you it was fun to show off the power that beast of an engine had but, fuel wise it just wasn't practical as an everyday driver. Especially now that I'm a family man. Reluctantly I had to let it go off to a happy home where someone would put it in the woods like it needed to be. Recently I purchased a 90 YJ wit a 2.5 and my fascination was born anew. This thing feels just like the ol straight 6 that I initially fell in love with. It's torque is similar and the amount of underpowering is about what I remember from the CJ5. Hell I don't want to go more than 65 in a Jeep anyway. So I just wanted to ask; Do other folks out there feel like I do about my 2.5? Or does everyone just wish they had held out for the V6? I for one couldn't be happier with my little 4 banger.

I love mine! It runs well, accelerates fine and has plenty of torque on the trail!

Now, would i swap for a 4bt? Yes.

I love my 2.5. Mine is a 95 with about 154k on it. Sure its underpowered but I rarely go over 60 mph, and driving around town and on trails it is just fine. Now of course if $ and time were no issue, I would love to drop a V8 in there.

troof. in town the 2.5 is more than capable and its tq curve makes it more than capable of offroading and towing small loads. I bought my 2.5 with the sole intention of completing an Ls2 swap down the road. all things being equal though, I am in no hurry to swap engines as the 4 cyl is and has performed better than I hoped it ever would.

haven't had my 95 yj rio grande long enough to know what mpg it gets. been too busy fixing it up with behind instrument panel repairs to get all the lighting to work, new brembo front rotors and pads, new 3 tube alum radiator , new trans oil cooler lines, and fixing to put bilstein shocks on her all way around. got a used gas tank stock skid plate to refinish to replace rusted one and debating monstaliner coating or just rustoleum to refinish it with, any opinions? just turned over 100 mi. on full gas tank(20 gal) and just started to dip a little on the gage. so far it starts easy enough and no leaks detectable or oil useage at 129K mi. AC works well and no wobble in the steering. a little under side surface rust and a little fender bleed thru rust a couple of places but I think repairable. it ain't no speed deamon that's for sure but I've got others to drive for that. sure hope the gas mileage shows me a pleasant surprise. my first jeep and so far I'm very impressed. primary purpose for it was my wifes wishes when in the mountains of NC and hopefully getting us up 3, 180 degree hairpin steep inclines to our log cabin(my 07 tundra 4x4 could only make it half way up on the 1.5 mi climb with the deepest 2 foot snow). we will see how the old girl does later this year...........Driller

I have 3 YJs with the 4 cyl. and a TJ with a 4. No complaints-I like to go slower to find new trails to venture off onto. If a CJ2A can run a 4, why can't a Wrangler...I still get from point A to point B just fine.

Oh, and I plow snow with 2 of the YJs with 4 cyl. I have a 1972 CJ5 with a factory optioned 304 V8, and it only can go 60 miles an hour...and burn MORE fuel to achieve the speed. 4 bangers are ok with me....

I'll join this party.
My 4 banger has 178K and running fine. On my 31's I go up to 75 but normally I'm at 60-65, more than enough.
- better gas milage
- more room under the hood to work with
- lighter, translates into easier to get out when getting stuck
- makes the decision to swap in a BT4 eventually so much easier (yeah, I'd love to have a diesel in it too)
- I was pulling cars out of the ditch while that famous February Chicago blizzard just fine

Side note: regardless of the size of the engine it does fine on the highway. If I want to feel SPEED and go balls-out I'll take my 955i triumph sprint. Within that price range no car will come close to what a liter bike can give you. so, you can say that at some point, to some degree I love irritating the sh..t out of people stuck behind me on AMG Mercedes's and other "low-flying" cars when I start off the intersection. Call me evil if you want.

Lol.. I love and respect you all for loving and respecting your 4 bangers..
I have had 3 4.0s, and I would have never considered anything less.

Based on all your testimony though, I am willing to.consider a 4 cycle for my daughters first jeep. Lol

I have a 1993 YJ with the 2.5L. I love it! Would like a little more power on the highway in the mountains, but I get 19mpg and would not want to trade it.

I drove a buddy's 4.0L yj a while back and the first thing I noticed is that it's much heavier. It was like it handled differently or something. It didn't have as much of an agile feel to it. I might be crazy though...

Like everyone else, I love my 4 banger. I've got a 91, and when I'm not underneath her, she's a lot of fun. A little slow going uphill on the highway sometimes, but I didn't get it for going uphill on highways.

You're probably undergeared. Our old 2.5s were stock with small tires. Either go back to stock tires for best mileage, or give your little beastie some big (4.1 or so) gears. Your 2.5 will work much easier and reward you with better mileage. I get about 18.5 around town.

x4. I want a 4bt and have been looking but can't find one that is in my price range. For now I settled on a 5cly Mercedes turbo diesel.

As far as the 4cyl and 6cyl for gas mileage, my buddy has a 94 6cyl and a 99 4cyl. He says the 4cyl only gets 1/2-1 mpg better than the 6cyl cause the 4cyl you have to step harder on the skinny pedal to get it going.

Nothing wrong with a 4cyl at all!

2.5

Four Bangers Rule. I can wheel all weekend w/o refueling. Most of my brothers with 6s and 8s can't say or do that.

We should open a "4 cyl. to 4BT" thread based on the amount of people wanting the conversion (unless of course I'm either lazy or blind and it is already there )

My 2.5 is my first Jeep/vehicle. When I was looking at it I didnt care at all what motor was in it. Then for a while I always wanted a 4.0 and looked at a few others. But then a noticed my 2.5 aint so bad and stuck with it
