Windshield Frame Paint Question

I am looking at painting the next jeep we get myself this summer and I am wondering if anybody has any tips specifically regarding the windshield frame...

Best to remove? Just Tape it off? Bust it out and get a new one? haha

TIA!!

Ashley

If your windshield is damaged (badly pitted or cracked), what I would do is as you are prepping the rest of the Jeep for paint, have the windshield company come and remove the old windshield. Then you can check carefully for rust on the inside channel.
If there is any rust other than very minor surface rust, I would replace the windshield frame.
Once the entire Jeep is painted to your satisfaction, then have the windshield company come back and install a new windshield with a new gasket.

Rust in the channel where the glass sits is all to common. An aftermarket windshield frame is cheap enough that it doesn't make any sense to attempt to patch the rust.

Search this forum for hints at getting the windshield frame bolts out without having to drill them.

Good Luck, L.M.

Thanks for the Advice Luckymac!! I will be looking into the cost of a full replacement most likely if that is a common issue

What year is your Yj? Mine is a 93, I replaced it in the first of January with a complete kit from Morris 4x4. I had it painted and the glass installed and ready put back on my Jeep and found that the bottom of the frame had a 90 degree bend on it, and the top wasn't crimped right. I had to cut the bottom of the frame and seal up the crimped are on the top with sealant. So be careful if you get another frame. I finally got them to compensate me somewhat for the problems with the windshield. And the cowl rubber was the wrong seal. I finally got it done . So good luck.

In high school I always referred to my old Willis as "She" because with no top, no doors, no air-conditioning, no radio and manual everything most girls wouldn't ride in it so it was pretty much my date :-)
