Yj tailgate to Cj Tailgate

How big of a pain in the arse is it to replace my yj tailgate with a Cj?

Same size hole, just different hinges. I went the other way on my cj-7 with no issues.

I saw a write up about it somewhere, just don't remember where. I know that the main thing was fixing it to where it locked up tight instead of rattling. I am thinking of doing it to my YJ.

If you do the swag kit, you can use your YJ tailgate. That way you don't have to repaint.

My main thing is the weight I wanna be able to sit on it and Im a big boy sittin at about 385 so I was thinkin of findin a way to upgrade the cable system and maybe just use the hinges on my Yj and just rotate to vertical and get a nice heavy cable set up like off a fullsize truck

Wow, you have my same problemI weigh in at 350. I thought of just making my own kit for the YJ gate. But if I could find the CJ one, I would probably do the same. I like the stamped look to.

the cable would be a good part of it, but making sure the metal backing up the hinges would probably be the main concern. Just to make sure the bolts wouldn't pull out or the metal tear out.

i just read the part about you big boys and pulling the cables out. i'd say you have to reinforce the tub pretty well where you mount the cables. i'd find tailgate cables for a pick up, and use plate on both sides of the tub to make the mounting.

What about some heavy duty washers on both sides of it? like fender washers that measure about an inch across or bigger?

I'm thinking more along the lines of 1/4 in plate.

I was thinking more along the lines of just being backer plates. You could always drill your bolt holes, then tack weld nuts onto the plate. Just something to spread the weight over a larger area.

It shouldn't be hard. I will have to look at mine when I get off of work. I know that the hardest part should be the hinges, but I would get the holes drilled in the tub where they need to be, get the plates set up, then tack some coat hanger to the plates to use as a handle to get past the gas tank. Then you can just bend the hanger up out of the way to hide it.

The chains could be done like the old chevy trucks. They had a piece of plastic tubing over the chain to keep it from beating up the paint and making noise.

A hunk of bicycle inner tube, would keep the chains from making a mess of your paint.

I think it would be sweet to have the tailgate hinge both ways, if you replace the hinge pins with some tractor supply pins, it could be done.

Then you could use it as a Coleman stove holder, & swing it aside when not using it.
