YJ TO TJ Flare Conversion Write Up

This thread will be a write up about switching your yj flares to tj flares.

First Things First You will need Tj flares. You can get them of quadratec for 120 bucks plus shipping. I went on ebay and got mine for 50.They need to be painted if you got them off ebay So go ahead and pickup krylon fusion in black. Its great. On a side note for your info rubicon flares are 1.25-1.50" wider so if you want that get those.

Materials:

Flares
Grinding Wheel with a cutoff blade
Metal snippers(i found these worke best when cutting flares)
about 40 #10 sheet metal screws
and 3/4 washers to fit over them
Krylon Fusion paint
black spray paint to cover exposed sheetmetal
Prep all and shop towels
vise grips or small C Clamps
Razor blade(s)

1.With snippers cut off the lip on the inside of the fender flare and then cut off the alignment plugs.
2.After that go over it and make it as smooth as possible

I am doing this now so give me a little while to finish it but any comments are welcome!

3 Mount your flares up and position them. You wont be able to do any cutting in the front because the wheel well stops and you'd be cuttin the inside out.(Feel it you'll understand)

4.Draw your cutting line and mark your holes.

5.Then You Cut BE Careful cuz once its gone its pretty much gone!

6.Drill your holes out and start the screws.

7. Then mount up your flares and finger start the screws.

8.Tighten them all down and viola you have tj flares!

My Battery died on my camera so finished pic will be up later.

Is there any advantages for switching the flares?

nice job and thanks for posting pics and descriptions. A lot of people don't realize how easy some things are until they actually see the process. I'm going to just go with fronts on mine as I don't want to cut out the backs just yet. Also, I used my grinder to remove the lip and alignment pegs, it's alot more accurate than a razor blade but you still have to be careful.

Could you get a similar look by just cutting the front/face of the stock yj fender?
