Your opinions on my gear ratio problem

I have a 1989 YJ and like to use the 33's but the gear ratio is too high to use 5th on flatland or 1st in steep terrain efficiently. Would it be better to lower the gears in the axels or the transfer case?

Axles..... For me anyway, the perfect setup was 488 gears.. I am guessing you have stock axles.. It crawled great and it would go down the highway with no problems.. If you think that is to low, the go with the 456 gears
Lowering the gears in the transfercase will only help you with crawling..

For every day use, the diff. gears are definately the most effective way to gain power back for your heep. If you want to get into serious crawling, a Deep V Klune, is an awesome way to reduce your gear ratio's in the transfer case. But that is only for crawling at a snails pace, and not for general getting down the highway. I believe that Joe, at Absolute Offroad can even supply you with gears, for your diffs. He is a vendor on here. He is also a guru, of information, and technical skill.

Same question in a sence. Im running 3.07 in my 93 yj with the 4.0 with a 32rh auto. Its sitting on 33x12.5's and does great offroad. taken it on class 4&5's and real good and also a daily driver on the freeway. It will run 65to 70 with no problem. Am I missing something with the gears being that tall but it working good ???? was thinking of changing to 3.73 but wat diffrence will it make ???

I would go with 456 gears or 488's if it was mine... Will work great out on the trail.. If you go 488's. it will carry ahigher RPM, but I do not think it would be anything to worry about.
