1946 cj2a giving it back a life.

Well I have always learned by doing so after building up a 93 xj (4.5 inch lift, trimmed out fenders, running 33x12.5, Cowl snorkel), and currently having a 07 2door jk(5.5 inch rock krawler lift 3 link front and rear, ace sliders, ace stubby stinger bumper, posion spyder bfh rear bumper, aev snorkel) , I have picked up a Willy.

Bought it from a couple that got it to plow with. Never did because the radiator leaked and he didn't get it fixed. So after it sitting for almost a year I bought it.

Initial plans are to strip it down to the frame media blast everything to find out what needs to be fixed or replaced. The motor will be pulled and gone through, I want the whole 60hp and 105 ft-lbs. It will get a 2-3 inch lift, and larger tires. Will be building sliders that are hidden, will also make/get jerry can and shovel mounts. It will be repainted olive drab with the white star. Kinda doing a restro-mod.

Trying to figure out the wiring. Figured I would take the steering column out to make some room. Can't seem to figure out how. My book of knowledge is still in ups or fedex hands. Anyone care to help?

M, You're going to spend a lot of time reaching behind the dash like you are doing in your pic. I don't think removing the column will give ya tons more room but here are a few pointers...

1. Remove the Speedo. You'll have a lot more access through that big hole.

2. The steering column is attached to the steering gearbox so to get it out you got to get the steering wheel off and then un-bolt the steering box under the Jeep and slide the column out that way. Getting the steering wheel off can be a real adventure so good luck with that. If you can....I'd keep the steering where it is and work around it.

3. If you can hang all the gauges out of the holes it will make it easier. Once you got it all wired you can just slide them back in their holes.

Mark

Thanks. Everything is coming out so I can remove the tub and clean repair and repaint the tub and frame.
I will pull it out with the box like you said after I get the wheel off. The wiring is so hacked that I'm thinking of tossing it all. So where in its past a po tried doing some wiring and its... Well let's put it this way the battery was hooked up neg to positive and positive to neg. So guess how the rest of the electrical looks.

ahh, seems he was trying to get his minimum number of posts so he can post in the for sale section, you need 15 posts so he probably was just choosing random threads and making one word posts.

Looks like a pretty solid lil Jeep. I'm Jealous for sure. Been wanting a Military Jeep for sometime now. Bought a new JK Jeep to help satisfy that itch, but it's only made things worse for me! LOL!

I want to find something a little newer than the 40's. I'm thinking late 50's. I want to make a USAF SAC Flightline Jeep. Seen a few projects and I do remember them from my early days in the USAF.

Good Luck with yours!

Thank you. Restoring one from your past would be cool. My dad had a wagoneer when I was little I would love to find one to redo.

Gotcha, I got my fingers crossed your wheel comes off. That makes things a lot easier. If it doesn't come off you would remove the tub by un-bolting the steering box from frame and then lifting off the tub and column/box as one unit. It sure would be great if there was a u-joint or something at the steering box so you can just remove the column but sadly that is not the case on the old Willys.

I started from scratch on mine. The original cloth covered wires were rotten and crumbling. A re-wire job isn't too hard on these old Jeeps.

Here is where she sits till Sunday or Monday. Front floor needs replaced,, body mounts are all disconnected, now its just the steering wheel that needs to come off. So I can pull the tub. There is oil, sludge and grime thickly coating everything behind the motor so new seal will be coming. Brakes seem seized somewhere. Pedal wouldn't budge when depressed.

Can you post a shot of the driver side frame, motormount area? My cj has been welded badly and I want to see how much I have to grind off. Thanks in advance. I am about the same stage as you are with my '46.

Nice photos, thanks for the reference. I am going to show some of mine. Note the driver side motor mount, what were they thinking? Definitely a challange to clean this up.

Awesome! I built my 1945 2a. It took me 7 years but I slacked and took my time. It needed a lot of work. I'll be watching your progress!

What is this? It is on the exhaust/ intake manifold, it was never hooked up to anything, it moves and can hear a flap or something moving around inside.

Heat Riser Flap. When it's cold it lets exhaust gas heat up the intake. That little "L" shaped end on the coiled spring needs to sit on a little resting tab for it to work. I rigged mine to just remain open since I live in a warm area.

Got the body off mine today. Lotsa rust. Do you have a plan for your body repair? I was thinking of treating it with phosphoric acid and then pressure washing it to blast the loose scale off. I do not have a sand blaster, that may be a little harsh anyway. More pics to share and compare.

The front floor is being replaced, as are both sides. The test will be media blasted.

Well the frame sits by its self motor is on a stand and trans and transfer case sitting on an old tire waiting for a freshening(if that's a word) up. Rear main seal seems good but a lot of oil around the bottom of the oil pan and timing cover.
