Hello Nick. Saw your find.

Please, think really hard about what you are building here. Those Jeeps are incredibly rare. If you are not upside down in it, which if you were just buying it for a trail rig I don't assume you are. Resell, let someone who wants to drop 15-20k in it do it. THEY WILL, and they will drive it, baby it and cherish it as one of the rarest jeeps from that era.

You can probably not lift a finger and flip that thing and pay for a clean Commando that can be cut up and you wont be tearing up one of 65ish known Hursts in the country.

I went to Ultimate Adventure a few years ago and there was a Commando there. It was bitchin, almost as cool as my bone stock 70 convertible Jeepster with 56k on it. That commando crushed rockers, doors and a windshield frame, I think the biggest rock we saw was maybe 3 feet tall. It was an amazingly clean rig, I can't imagine the work it needed once it got home. I wiped out a couple of fenders, that unbolt with 5 screws and can be bought all day long for next to nothing. What happens if you flatten out that hood? You will never, ever, be able to replace it.

They are heavy, have poor approach and departure angles and do not have the strongest frames. Every one you see is way too tall to clear tires in the tiny wheel wells. If you want it to be low and wheel with a good COG, you are looking at cutting the rear wells out and lengthening. Check out the "Going Commando" build on Pirate.

Man I love Jeepsters, it took me 5 years to find mine. Every where I go people ask about it, almost as much as my rig. I have been wheeling hard for close to 10 years and think it is awesome you are wanting a truly unique rig, a Hurst was never intended for this.

I applaud you for your find, just giving you some perspective from a hardcore wheeler, and jeepster owner...

See you on the trails, looks like you guys have a nice site here

Exclamation Seriously?

Dude. Sweet find!!!

Please listen to above advice.

Put a little into the Hurst, flip it, and then get another Jeepster or Commando to modify any way you like. There's a bunch of stockers out there on allofcraigs.

Since you have 1 of maybe** 65 Hursts out there, join the Jeepster Commando Club of America (JCCA forum) - you could probably flip that thing in minutes with those folks.

http://jeepstercommandoclub.com/forum/index.php

You'll also get some really interesting build ideas, as Jeepsters = "built, not bought." You literally have to fab up just about everything.

You have a find there - and I'm sure one of the guys on the JCCA will fill you in on its worth, and even give you an offer.

Some stuff to know:

You have TH400 and a D20 transfer case. D27 front, and D44 rear. Panhard rod on D27. 3.73 axles. Both narrow track. Front D30/discs is a popular upgrade.
Rear springs outboard, front inboard.
You have saginaw steering (either manual or power) = WAY better than Ross...
power brakes were an option.
Jeepsters share the CJ6 frame. Needs to be fully boxed and reinforced at connecting points if you are going to wheel it.
notorious for rust on floorboards and behind seats
Has J10/J20 speedometer cluster and POS rocker switches for fan, lights, etc.
101" wheelbase (hence C101 designation. Rides like a 04-06 Unlimited)
In stock configuration rear tubs and front leafs will not allow anything bigger than 31 x 10.5 without rubbing. With some small cuts, 33 x 9.5 will work, but gearing a little low (3.73).
225 V6 is a torquey motor and plenty for what the Jeepster was intended to do ("mountain goat") - but not for what you intend.

So - do what you must, but at least check out the JCCA website and get some ideas before you butcher that rare rig with a sawzall.

Go to this website, and let the banner pics scroll through for a look at some classic Jeepsters. Just Jeepsters

Cheers again on the great find!!

Great. Like it wasn't a tough enough decision already. You too have to join WF just to post in this thread. Why don't you guys make my decision easier by driving up here with truck, trailer and cash.

Ok,

I'm about two years into what I'm estimating to be a five year complete restoration. This is actually my third one. The other two I bought were just too far gone (rusty) and ended up being parts jeeps.

Here it is when I drugged it home from NC. Very rough, complete, with original bill of sale, titled in the original owners name.

Sheet metal repairs finished. That took about a year.

Currently I have the body removed to work on the frame and drive train.

Mine will be pretty much stock. Still have not totally decided if I'm keeping the stock motor and trans. If I go with a more modern motor it will probably be a 4.3 / 700R4.

There are several of these hurst projects going on over on the JCCA. One guys just got published in JP (January 2012).

Seriously, I hope you consider bringing back to stock. These are exceedingly rare. Your really lucky to find one in such good condition.

Good luck.

Nick, nice job taking outside opinions without being defensive. I was really worried you would take advice as criticism, seems like you have a great attitude.

Do whatever makes you happy, but you have money on the table for sure with that thing. May take a month or so to get a buyer, but someone will gladly take it off your hands if you decide not to restore it.

I am always open to advice. That is what the forum is for.

Yes they posted a link to this thread on there.

I suggested if its worth something someone would offer you double what you paid.

Whats your contact information Ill pass it on to a guy named Russell he has 5 jeepsters maybe he wants to make you a offer!!!!

My name is Jeff Im from Iowa...

It is true as you were told in previous posts above, these things are a pain in the rear to work with. Basically the frame is narrow all the way back where a cj etc the frame widens after the motor. This narrow frame makes it a bear to run exhaust, I had to notch my frame and floor to fit a Atlas and Im in the process now of notching it further to rotate it up flatter as well as doing the floor again.

The tub is narrow inside do to the configuration of the doors vs a cj. I have 6 inches between my 20 inch wide seats so no room for any aftermarket console at all. the steering column goes thru the floor at a bad angle so your foot room limited.

I put in a caddy tilt tele column and moved the bottom of it up towards the fire wall 8 inches so so I could put in a wider brake pedal and reach it with either foot easily.

The dash area you have to work with is small, if I had it to do over I would move my dash back 4-5 inches when I had it cut out for the cage installation.

The jeepster oem fenders nose etc make it very very challenging to put in a v-8. I have the long cj nose and still am room challenged with a 304. I am in the process off cutting the back of the headlight buckets so I can move the radiator fwd and get 5 inches between it and the water pump so I can fit a good electric fan.. Ill have to run the shallower led headlights which are spendy!

The plus's to a built jeepster like mine are towing it on a open trailer from Iowa to the Rubicon and Moab etc. People are constantly taking pics of it! I think its the mostly tough look of black and camo not really sure. But I cant stop and get gas without people taking pics most times.

I enjoy wheeling something different, there is a small group of guys like me on JCCA who wheel regularly and Ive met them at the Rubicon and Moab. If I had a tj or cj not sure I would have found as good a group of guys.

Heres a link to my photo bucket.. the miobi, rubicon and black hills folders on the right are mostly jeep trips. Though I think there are some scattered all over in there enjoy! Its going to be much cooler after the links, Ori struts and Spider Trax axles I have here to install now.

Not true at all. It is a Jeep thing not just a Jeepster thing.

Yes but Ive seen plenty of jeep groups on the trail I would not have been happy to tow 1700 miles to meet!! Drinking on the trail is the main thing Ive seen too much.

I sent my Vin to the Hurst Jeepster people. I have learned it is 1 of 71 known to exist. How many were made is really unknown. Supposed to be 500 but all documents say 100. With 71 accounted for I think more than 100 were built.

I have decided to not cut it up. I will trade it for something I can build or sell. I have four people interested. I'll keep you all up to speed.

I have learned a lot about Jeepsters from the JCCA guys. Good bunch of people on that forum.
