1973 Jeep CJ custom rock crawler... is it worth it?

Hey everyone, I am new to the forum and am looking into getting a Jeep rock crawler under 6k. I found this one and looked at it in person, kind of a hack job fab suspension. Everything works fine and drives good. Real low gearing. Body is almost rust free except for a little rust though in floorboards... I can get it for $5500, guy wont go any lower. Do you guys think its worth it? Ill try and post pics I took of it.

Here is the ad: Jeep CJ Rock Crawler

No it isnt street legal. I just want a toy to play around in the woods. I am 19 and in college so money is tight. I just dont want to get screwed over and find out its a total hack job. I am new to Jeeps and am not sure what something like this is worth.

well i think the jeep is prob very capable on the trail and cool looking but i would agree it looks like it has not only seen some home aid mods but it has spent some serious time off the road. With out knowing details i think mabe i would take my 5 grand and buy someones stocker for cheap mabe a bit newer and throw my own aftermart parts on. That way i know exactly what im getting and its made for me. Welcome to the wf. Im a newb too.

$5500 no, $1500-2000 maybe. Good things: rear 14 bolt, spring over, not sure what that front axle is. The bad, The rear frame has been extended and the tube looks small from the pic's. I would look for a more stock jeep an build it up. However its your money.

Thanks Guys! I was figuring the same thing, but didnt want to low ball the guy, you know how that goes. I have been a long time chevy fan, but when I drove my friends TJ with the doors off and top down, I realized thats its just a Jeep thing and I am wanting a jeep now. As far as buying a stocker and modifying it, I think that would be way out of my price range for what I want to do. I think i'll save up and buy the Jeep I really want. Thank you all for the help!

The rear frame extension worries me. I don't like the engineering there. Lose wires and sheet metal screws everywhere suggests less than perfect attention to detail.

At that price point you could get a nice (edit: not "nice." should have said "not totally trashed") TJ, put 33" tires on it and drive to the trails. And tackle 97% of trails in Tennessee.

If you buy this, how will you get it to the trails? Truck and trailer?

I'm not a king fan....broke the shaft on one few years back at Tellico, they wouldn't warranty anything so we said screw um. We are running air shocks now and like them alot more than coilovers

Oh I know you were

We use the sway-a-ways because they have the largest shaft diameter
