1984 CJ-7 won't start

I just got my cj on Wednesday. It's a 258 fuel injected. It ran last night fine. I parked and this morning went to turn it on and nothing. After work today I turned the key over and it starts then dies right away. Buy if I give it has I can keep it running but the exhaust is black and sounds rough. I'm not sure what to do. I have an appt on Tuesday at the place I bought for them to look at it. I'm worried it'll need to be towed there. Thanks for any help.

What kind of fuel injection conversion is it? Black smoke could mean leaking injectors.

I'm not sure the place I bought it from just said fuel injected. On the back under the one tail light it says 4.2L fuel injected.

Ok, the reason I'm asking is because the 4.2L (I've always heard it referred to by it's volume in inches, 258 btw) isn't fuel injected, it uses a carburetor. There's loads of different conversions you can do to make it fuel injected though, so I think finding out what you're using would be the first step if it is leaky injectors.

Oh, also, you said when you give it gas you can keep it running, does it die when you let off the pedal?

No CJs ever came from the factory with FI, so you'll first need to figure out what engine and injection system it actually has, and then diagnose from there.

A lot of people swap out small block chevy engines for the fuel injection, so look around for a chevy logo. Is it a Vsomething or inline (two heads or one)? Pictures of the engine bay would help.

The 4.2 is carbed but computer controlled with a stepper motor on rear, been reading and they have a problem with idle tubes clogging causing fuel to spill over, simple fix just look it up or put a 4.0 in it.
