4.2 queston

i was a bit deflated today when a friend of mine told me i wouldnt be able to do much offroading with a carb. fed engine because at certain angles there would be fuel starvation the arguement makes sense to me but has anyone else ever had a problem with this?

it should be fine unless you're going up REALLY steep hills,

they used carbs on all engine til the 80's and they went GREAT off roadn, jsut cause there is new technology doesnt mean the old doesnt work anymore!

Some it does have to do with what carb you are running. Some where designed for off roading and some just happened to work well for off roading. Just because you are not running a fuel injection system on your engine does not religate it to road use only. The army has been using jeeps for decades off road, well before fuel injection.

Don't let it get you down. If you keep the momentum going and aren't basically rock climbing up waterfalls your carb will be fine. I learned how to drive and wheel on an 83 Carbed CJ with the 258. It always did fine.

The more you get into it the more you might want to start saving for an EFI or TBI setup.

Also, little tricks will help the carb problems. adjustable fuel pressure regulator, flipping the carb, spring loaded seats, etc.

Just because you have a carb doesn't mean you can't go vertical. I have plenty of friends that loose oil pressure before they loose fuel pressure with carbs

Yeah those 41-86 Cj's only where aloud on the street... If you set the carb up correctly, it should be fine. With the 4.2 you want to make sure ALL your vacum lines are good to go. IF you have the carter carb.. Be sure to clean out the ventuir/pickup tubes, This helps alot when off camber etc, to keep it going.
