61 Willys

I'm am not very familiar with the Willy's but there is one for sale on my path home from work. I stopped to look at it today and they are asking $8000 obo. I didn't talk to anyone so I'm not sure about the milage or engine size (if it's still stock). I know it runs because I've seen the guy park it in his garage. Now obviously, nobody is going to pay $8,000. It's white, with minimal body rust underneath and it could use a new paint job. The frame is in decent shape with no major rotting. The seats are in good shape and the interior could use a good sanding and paint as well. There was moisture under the tranny, not sure if the engine is leaking or the tranny because the whole thing was wet.

It's been there for about 2 weeks.

I'm just wondering the ballpark value of this 61 Willys. I know they are becoming more popular but $8000 seems to be an awful lot. If anybody could give me a rough estimate that would be great. For example, If it has a new/rebuilt engine with X amount of miles then it's worth about X amount of dollars.

Maybe if it's there Monday I'll snap some pics for you guys for a better estimate.

Thanks in advance guys and/or gals!

Once you've taken the plunge, its pure freedom from there.

Willys what? Cj5?

Prices are all over the ballpark. I've seen $500-$45,000 range for early CJs.
Those top prices are rare, and a little weird though. More normally, 2,000-6,000 I would guess. But all over the freakin' place.

I'd send DougTimme a private message with some photos. He's really into the early stuff.

This is one that was for sale for over 30k if I remember rightly. I had it on my blog a year ago, but didn't mention the price.

If it is a 4 cyl, which it should be, I wouldn't pay that much, unless somewhat restored. If it has the Dauntless V6, it's a transplant. V6 didn't come out till 1966 as an option. Now, if it is a diesel, that would be the reason for the price. 1961 was the year the Perkins diesel was an option. Pretty rare to find, really. If it is clean, and basic 4 cyl., 2000-6000 dollar range is where I have seen em go, just like Geoff@Bestop said. Check the frame rails for cracks, they are noted for cracking as they are not boxed, open c-channel. Also, look at the hat channels under the tub to see if they are solid, or need replaced, along with the body mounts. Get some pics of it...I like the old iron....
