I have a 74 cj5 It has a 3" susp lift, and Brand new pro comp 9000 shocks, 3 " body lift, Fiberglass tub, abd 35" bf tires, The jeep seems like it wants to wonder or is unpredicatable. I have been told to make a cross bar on the front axle. to help keep it from moving side to side under the frame. And also to get rid of the body lift I would love to do but have brand new 35s on it. I bought the jeep this way. I don't go mudding much anymore but am looking for a more streetable option. Wheel spacers? I am open to any help or sugestions that anyone might have. Thanks for the help in advance.
I would say some of the issues might be your stock steering in 74 was not really setup with 35's in mind. Could just need an alignment. As for the body lift, maybe do a 1.25" body lift and some lift schackles.
I agree – You really need to make sure all the steering is good and not worn out. Also, if you are still running the drum brakes that will be a issue also.
Yeah, but from the looks of it, you only go as fast as you can push it.
Firecat: CJs are notorious for steering that wanders. When people say they have a sport car that handles like its on rails, well, that the opposite end of the spectrum that starts with a Jeep. So it'll never be "good."
But you could also have a worn out steering box, and the bracing on the box is weak. You could have worn bits all up and down the line.
I don't know who you're getting your advice from, but an expert is called for, I think. Somewhere in your town is a place called "Frank's Xtreme Offroad" or something sort of similar. Give them a call.
In my home town, they've got two or three old Jeepsters parked out front. They've seen sloppy steering on a CJ before, and they can help.
04firecat I doubt your 3" body lift has anything to do with your wander but I personally would ditch it for a 1.25 body lift like 4jeepn mentioned and a set of TJ flairs will make the difference. As for wander i would start with an alignment (check for caster) then check and replace if necessary any suspension parts starting with steering box and brace as mentioned also..
I have a 1980 CJ5 with 3" body and 4" suspension with old school 35x14.50 Ground hogs.. My jeep also had a lot of road wonder, so I replaced the original manual steering with a rebuilt manual steering box.. No sway bars!!!
I have very little road wonder now..
