Sounds pretty good to me. Has a lot of good things that add real value. V8, 4 spd, no rust and top/doors.

If it's in western Colorado you'll need to adjust the carb for lower altitude, unless you live in the mountains too.

Thanks had not thought of the carb deal. Yea it's spent it's whole life between 5,000 ft and 10,000 ft. And my plan includes driving it 2,000 miles home to my staggering 1500 ft altitude. My son in law is going to keep it in Co. this winter and do all the fluids and run it around for daily use trying to get any bugs out. may take it home in April. I'll investigate the carb changes during that time. Thanks again. John

Good buy. Come down to Texas and you can sell it for $5,000 all day long.

I'd say it's a good deal, one question though. What does the altitude difference do to the car?

Carb. not Car - in the old days you rejetted for extreme changes in altitude like from 8,000ft. to 1,500 ft. like I live at. This is no longer an issue with fuel injection.

Congrats on the CJ purchase! I am a YJ man(1st Jeep) & I am about ready for another(keeping the YJ too)... not sure if I want to go CJ or TJ.

Post some pics of that thing when you can. I want to see what a well maintained 32 year old Jeep looks like.

OK, here's the first few questions. What year half doors can I use? How close would International scout axles be for width compared to the CJ-7? Thanks, John

This link has great info on the scout swap:
http://www.jeeptech.com/convaxle/peterson.html
I had bought a rear scout 44 and was looking for a front when this article changed my thinking. I have since swapped in some cj wide tracks and built them up front and rear. I put a one piece axle with a Detroit locker in back and a Spartan locker up front with 3.54 gears and and a 4:1 low gear dana 300 transfer case conversion and have had no issues with them yet.

Having said that, I have seen cj's with 44's front & rear that look and perform awesome!

As for the doors, the 79 cj tub uses a paddle latch vs a bolt latch which came out around 82, although I'm not 100% on the year. Half doors for the early cj7 door styles are harder to find. This I know from experience! I had a 78 cj7 with fiberglass half doors that had the correct latch. I sold them with that jeep and have regretted it since!

Doors are a semi-complicated topic. Although the door opening between '76 and '95 are the same, there are several latches. '76 to '79 have a unique latch as CJ7otr said, since they have a "slide" type latch versus a bolt/striker type.

If you are looking for a set of half doors I think the easiest way to do it is buy a set of bestop half doors, part # 53028. They come with there own latch. It has to be removed to switch from half doors back to full doors but I threaded my tub so they are pretty easy to remove. I picked up a unused set off a guy locally for $50 a couple weeks ago and very happy.

Now there are a few different styles of soft doors out there for a cj but it takes a bit of research to see what fits because of the different style soft tops, door latches, etc. Some of the soft doors actually hold on the soft top hardware to stay closed.

I would love to find a set of full soft doors for my cj but I have a YJ style top, old style latch and I don't want to chang either so I figure I will have to modify a set to have some.

good price and low miles. I had 185,000 miles on mine and it could pull the front tires off the ground on dry pavement.

Thanks guys, I've got 6 long months to wait for it to get here, So my plans will change many times before then. Right now I'm going to clean it very well remove the hard top and doors put a bikini top on for the summer and go from there. I would like to pull the tub and have the underside completely done with Duraliner or some brand. I was thinking of having the tub chemically stripped but the budget won't allow and then I might be years putting it back together. So do you think steam cleaning the tub, scuffing it up then having the underside and inside professionally sprayed would keep it from rusting and lower the interior noise level? Has anyone of you used lizard skin heat and sound deadener I know it won't replace truck bed liner and I would have to check weather you could use one over the other. Thanks, John

The four speed transmission was not available on the 1978 CJ-7 with the 304 V-8 or I would have ordered it. Don't know if it was available on the 1979 but you might want to check if the Jeep is being offered as original. Just saying.
