80 CJ 5 running real bad

Hello all
First, I'm no mechanic.......with that said I need some help. Driving my 4 speed yesterday. Got to 35-40 mph and started shaking and shuddering real bad. Back fired a few times throughout the process of getting it home. Engine dies several times on the route home. Thought I was out of gas at first, but same thing continued after adding fuel. Oil ok. Couldn't get it over 20 mph without knocking and shaking. Thoughts?

I would check the timing first off or have a shop do it

I have had a similar problem with my '82 CJ7. I would check the vacuum lines as suggested above but also I would look at the ignition control module NAPA pn tp-40. I found on mine that the module needed replaced and noticed rust to where it mounted on the fenderwell. I cleaned up the surface rust and when I installed the new module I put a dab of dielyctic(?) grease where the bolts mount it to the fender. I always carry a spare one in my toolbox to ensure that if it fails on the trail I can get up and running in less than 10 minutes. Hope this helps.
