84 CJ7 Renegade-transmission conversion

Just found my baby. Needs some drastic attention. Automatics just aren't acceptable, especially in something as sweet as this.

Looking to see what my battle plan should entail. Find parts, and a talented craftsman. Unfortunately I will have to find someone local, not qualified to handle the project on my own. Takes much more than desire to get it done right.

Any ideas on what I should be expecting?

At least it doesn't have power steering. Very impressed with that. Sweet rig all together. Was someone's adored project. I bet they miss it fiercely. I won't make the same mistake.

Pics?

So I assume you want to convert to a manual? Which engine do you have?

Straight 6. Original engine.

Where in NY? Its driveable. Would be a worthy trip. What are your thoughts? How long would a project like this take? Expense? Necessary and well worth it.

No pics yet. (Rough around the edges. Like them better that way. ) Pics this weekend, maybe sooner. Pre paint job of course.. nothing shiny for me..

Well based on year I will assume you have a dana 300 transfer case. This can be reused for your swap. Here is a list of other stuff you will need

- Pedals
- Tranny - You can run a t176, T4, T5...maybe others. Price with bell varies but figure in the $400 range....maybe more depending.
- Driveshafts - modified or by correct ones for your jeep.
- Clutch
- Clutch linkage
- Flywheel - I assume you would need a new one as well.

My guess is around $1,000. Your best bet would be to find someone doing a swap to a v8 and buy it all...might save you up to half depending on how much it is in their way.

Thank you for your quick and detailed response. It sounds like an excellent battle plan. I am very excited. I can't wait to drive it. Have to start before I can finish. Let's see what I can find..

I'm in the southern finger lakes near Horseheads. but the jeep is still in Colorado waiting for me to be able to ship it here. I think my auto trans swap is at least a year or so away. I have been told a AW4 would be the way to but I'm not sure what I'll need to make it fit behind a 304 and in front of my Dana 20. but 1st. I want to get a OME 2 1/2" lift with a shackle reverse and YJ springs. also a Howell EFI kit maybe someday!

From What I have been digging, The AW4 is bolt-up. Only possible physical mods would be at the skid-plate/Cross member for the tranny/t-case mounts. The biggest deal with the AW4 is the electronics as it is electronic shift control.
I am currently doing some digging on this for my buggy as I will be doing this swap within the next couple weeks. I do understand the simplest means of AW4 is to pull the TCM from the same vehicle as the tranny, and inter connect it. or use an after market tcm kit.
I am also contemplating literally building my own tcm with many 'shift tables' for different terrain as well as a manual mode.
