alaska cj8 overland

hey hows it going? so i am lucky enough to be stationed in alaska on a tiny island and was talking to a local guy trying to find jeep parts and he refered me to another local guy that had tons of jeeps, i get to this guys house/workshop and he has a cj8 overland from the alaska postal service lifted on 35s with a 304 locked and loaded with postal hard top and doors and runs! and has a second one that is untouched my jaw dropped when i saw it.. so after talking to this guy for a little bit he says hes out of the jeep game and just doesnt have the time for it any more, and says he would sell it to me and told me to make him an offer?! im just trying to figure out what kinda of offer i should make him? this thing is awesome he is very very resonable on price for parts super nice guy and very knowledgable, like when we were shooting the shit he found a body lift brand new in the box and told me to make an offer and sold it to me for 50 bucks.

Sweet find!

So are you interested in the built cj8 or the "stock" one?

How's the rust, interior, etc?

I've seen built cj8 trail rigs for $6k to $10k. Super nice ones up to $20k. Projects run $2500 to $5000.

The big question is - will Uncle Sam ship the vehicle off the island for you when your tour is up?

It would probably be worth a lot anywhere. You could offload the YJ when it is time to leave and ship the CJ8 home. Then sell it to a collector.

When I was stationed in Scotland, folks used to do that with furniture. You could buy beautiful old solid wood furniture there for peanuts. Folks would stock up before leaving, sell or give away all their US furniture they brought over, then sell the antique wood furniture when they got it back to the US.

If you're getting both, I'd offer around 6-7k. See what he says. Helluva find.
Thanks for your service.

Just low numbers. I'd say the built cj8 is worth $5k. Paint, interior and tops increase the value. I'd say the other one is worth $2500. Just my opinion but those are conservative prices and could get your money back at any point...

Like someone else says $6 to $7k would be sweet.... Guy bought my harley this weekend has a cj8 that had fresh paint but needed tires, finished wiring and some carb adjustments and he has been offered more than $7k for it. It wasn't beat up but wasn't finished either. I was hoping I could get it cheap but it didn't work out.

If I'm not mistaken, the Alaska Postal CJ-8's are extra rare. Only a few were made and could definitely could sold to a collector for serious $$$$
