Anti-theft system for the whole CJ

Does anybody have a good suggestion for a functional means to prevent my toy from becoming somebody else's ill gotten gains? I'm working too hard on it and paying too much for it to be stolen.
I'm thinking the Ravelco system might be a good answer.

If you have a electric fuel pump I know people who have installed online toggle switches. Doesn't necessarily prevent, just might deter.

Well, not sure how much you are willing to spend, but on my TJ, I have a Viper 5901 2-way alarm system with a motion sensor and battery backup system. The alarm itself is 2-way, so if the alarm is triggered and I am within it's 1 mile range, the remote starts going crazy - beeping and vibrating to tell me my alarm was set off. If I have it parked with the top/doors off, the motion sensor helps protect the interior area. If you hang around the outside of the Jeep for a second or two, the siren starts chirping as a warning. If someone was to stick their hand or head into the jeep, the full alarm is triggered. The battery backup system is there so that if someone was to crawl under the passenger side and cut the battery cables, the alarm is still powered by the backup battery, and will be triggered when it see's the voltage drop. The Viper system also utilizes a starter kill, shock sensor, and monitors hood and door triggers.

If the one mile range isn't enough for you, you can also add on the smart start module and get notifications on your smart phone from nearly anywhere in the country. I plan to add this on at some point, but the $200 price tag and $50/yr service fee isn't worth it to me at this point.

I have found a gearshift is a great theft deterrent.. (half joking). I say this in talking to people I work with most of whom are younger have no clue how to drive a stick.. And I'm just under 40.

2ndary kill switch much like the battery toggle mentioned above. This is probably what I will do since my LJ is an auto..

Sorry my reply is so late... I don't get over to the CJ forums often...

I am a mobile electronics installer, so I saved a bunch on installing it myself. If you plan to have a shop do it and you buy everything at standard retail price, I would plan on $650-750 for the same setup installed on a CJ or YJ, a TJ or JK could be a bit more.

If you feel confident installing it yourself, it's not too bad, just a bunch of wire searching and testing. The motion sensor is a bit of a pain to get dialed in, but once adjusted properly, it will work well without annoying false alarms. Installing it all yourself would put the price around $300 or so depending on the deals you find on the components.

Thanks... I really want a motion sensor alarm but I'm not too big on installing it. I've done basic audio system installs and even did some wiring for a piggy back tuner but that was with all wiring diagrams and color charts. It was like reading a picture book as opposed to a novel. I'm not too keen on wiring diagrams.

Since your a mobile electronics installer, any recommendations of specific brands or models? Any brand to stay away from? I had a prestige auto start and alarm on my last truck and i loved it, no motion sensor though

Personally, I would really only recommend Viper. DEI, their parent company, also makes Clifford, Python, and a few others, but I find Viper's quality to be the best. Viper alarms and remote starts also come with a lifetime warranty on everything except the remotes.

If you want a similar setup to what I have, you would want the Viper 5204 or the 5704, the 5704 is the same as my older 5901 - 1-mile range, and the LCD screen to tell you if the Jeep is locked, if it started, and if your alarm goes off. The 5204 is still two way, but you don't get the screen, just little LED lights next to each button and a beeping sound. For the motion sensor, DEI makes the 508D, it works very well, and is probably the most popular field disturbance sensor out there. DEI also makes the 520T, which is the battery backup for the alarm. This unit actually keeps the whole alarm system powered up with a small backup battery whenever the battery is disconnected - not just the siren, and will also trigger the alarm when the car's voltage is lost. If you want the smart start system to control it all from your smartphone, you want Viper's VSM250 add-on.
