Building a cj

Hello! I found a decent running 78cj5 for sale. $2,500. Everything runs, but needs a lot of work. I want this to be a fix up project for me and my old man. Only thing is, i don't know the direction i want to go in?!?!

A massive krawler? Or a low, fast desert type speed buggy.
I have seen a lot of cj krawlers but never seen a fast type buggy.

I have never owned or driven a jeep with the straight 6 in it nor do i know how well they perform. Im pretty sure the krawler direction will be more money. Also, i have a JK that i have built into being my DD and krawler on the weekends.

Any advice of suggestions is welcomed.

Thanks

What exactly needs work? Is the body/frame swiss cheese? Is it leaking? For a krawler i like the longer wheel base of the cj-7..plus a bit more room. that being said the 258 6cly is good motor, but is is not a HP monster i think stock they maxed around 120-130 on a good day. Should have a model 20 t-case, rear model 20 or maybe a dana 44... front will be dana 30, might have front drums... thus make a list of how much the costs will run you and go from there.

You may consider running the 4.2 L straight six , but convert to TBI .

Gives good low end torque and with the TBI off camber is not an issue.
